2020–2022 · Based on 2 seasons through November 11, 2022 ·
Actor Zac Efron travels with wellness guide Darin Olien to learn how people in different places live healthier lives. The main conflict is between modern habits and the need to protect health, land, and natural resources. The first season moves through several countries, while the second season stays in Australia and meets people dealing with fires, reefs, farms, and land care. The tone is bright, playful, and easy to watch, but it also covers climate damage and natural disasters.
The show repeatedly promotes climate action and cleaner energy. It also links wellness to less waste, greener food, and changes in daily life. The London episode tells viewers to use elections to demand change, while the Australia season gives strong attention to Aboriginal land care, rising seas, and the effects of colonization. These ideas are clear across both seasons, but the show usually teaches through travel, food, and jokes instead of long political speeches.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Down to Earth with Zac Efron.
Woke representation / casting
The show repeatedly places local women, Indigenous Australians, and community leaders in teaching roles. Season 2 makes Indigenous voices especially visible in several episodes. Those choices fit the places and subjects being covered, so they do not look like random quota casting. The repeated identity focus still gives this factor a small score.
15%
Woke political dialogue
The hosts repeatedly discuss climate change, carbon footprints, pollution, renewable energy, and public services. A London guest tells viewers to use elections to demand change, and the segment repeats the idea as vote, vote, vote. The France episode praises public water and calls it a common good instead of a business. Season 2 adds rising seas, habitat protection, waste, climate-linked fires, and colonial history. The dialogue is clear and recurring, but it usually gives short lessons instead of long speeches.
38%
Identity-driven story themes
Season 1 centers on healthy and sustainable living, without a continuing race, sex, or queer plot. Season 2 gives several episodes to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, their customs, land care, and rising sea levels. The Aboriginal Voices episode describes colonization as a hostile takeover and says Aboriginal people still struggle to have a voice in their own land. The show presents Indigenous knowledge as a guide for modern society. This is a strong late-season identity theme, but it covers only part of the two-season run.
45%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The show compares American fossil-fuel power and private car use with cleaner public systems in Europe and Australia. The France episode praises public water service over private distribution. The London episode supports congestion charging and tells viewers to use elections to demand change. Season 2 criticizes British colonization and says modern society should learn from Aboriginal land care. The critique is recurring but mainly tied to environmental policy, with little focus on family, religion, masculinity, or traditional social roles.
34%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The show is an original documentary with no established fictional characters or canon that it changes.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Online searches found no sustained anti-woke reaction or specific complaint. Movieguide criticized the show for a secular humanist worldview and an environmentalist agenda. That review is a single Christian-site complaint, not a large backlash. Other coverage focused on shallow teaching, wellness claims, sponsorships, or a trademark lawsuit instead of woke politics. The factor stays very low.
8%
Creator track record context
Most producer profiles show low political signals and no strong partisan record. Zac Efron, Dylan Efron, and Darin Olien are linked mainly to environmental, plant-based, and conservation work. Rachael Wax Taber and Griffin Gmelich have credits tied to queer history and gay comedians, but those projects do not make this show queer-centered. Brian Volk-Weiss has spoken against political correctness and focuses on entertainment. This supports a low creator track record context score.
