2022 · Based on 1 season, 7 episodes through August 19, 2022 ·
Echoes follows identical sisters Leni and Gina McCleary, who have secretly traded places every year since childhood. They share homes, husbands, jobs, and a daughter, so one sister’s disappearance tears apart both lives. The search moves between a horse ranch and a small town in Virginia, with flashbacks to a troubled family past. The tone is dark, tense, and very soap-like.
The show has a noticeable mix of identity representation in its supporting cast. A black woman serves as the sheriff, a Latina woman serves as her deputy, and the twins’ wheelchair-using older sister is a major family character. A small side plot shows Meg coming out as gay and attending a party with her girlfriend, but that plot does not drive the mystery. The main story instead centers on trauma, motherhood, family control, cheating, mental health, and the struggle to live as a separate person. The season does not build its conflict around political speeches or activist ideas.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Echoes.
Woke representation / casting
The main story centers on two white sisters, which fits their family history. The show also places a black woman as the sheriff and a Latina woman as the deputy in the small Virginia town. The twins’ wheelchair-using older sister is another major identity choice in the family. This creates a noticeable pattern in important roles, but the show does not frame the casting as a political message.
26%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The dialogue deals with missing people, crime, family secrets, trauma, and relationships. The season has no recurring speeches about current politics or activist causes.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Episode 3 shows Meg coming out as gay and attending the birthday party with her girlfriend. The scene gives a minor character a clear LGBTQ relationship, but it is tied to the twins’ blackmail and secrecy plot. The main identity story follows two sisters copying each other’s lives, not modern race, gender, or sexuality politics. The queer material is visible but brief and does not drive the season.
15%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The sheriff investigates the crimes, but the show does not attack the police, men, churches, or family life through a modern activist message. Its conflicts come from lies, trauma, crime, and family abuse.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Echoes is an original story about fictional twins. It does not rewrite an established character, source, or real historical event.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
One audience review objected to the rural town having several LGBTQ characters. The same review objected to a man accepting his partner’s choice to end a pregnancy and to husbands accepting the twins’ cheating. Most reported criticism focused on slow pacing, silly twists, and weak writing instead of woke themes. The backlash was limited, with no major organized controversy found.
18%
Creator track record context
Cached context rates Vanessa Gazy at 35/100 for stories about identity, family, sexuality, and complex women. It rates Imogen Banks at 55/100 for supporting female writers and female-led stories. Kat Candler, Quinton Peeples, and Brian Yorkey are rated 22, 18, and 21, with no strong activist record noted. The current show uses a female-centered story, but its plot and promotion stay focused on mystery and family trauma.
