2024 · Based on 1 season, 6 episodes through February 22, 2024 ·
Expats follows Margaret Woo, a wealthy American mother living in Hong Kong with her family. Her three-year-old son Gus vanishes during a crowded night-market outing, and the loss connects her to Mercy, the young woman watching him, and Hilary, her close friend. The women face guilt, marriage trouble, family pain, pregnancy, and questions about where they belong. The six-episode drama is slow, sad, tense, and often quiet, with the city and its storms shaping the mood.
The show makes motherhood and female choice major subjects across the women’s lives. Hilary resists pressure to become a mother, while Mercy’s pregnancy and relationship with Charly bring a same-sex romance into the later story. The drama repeatedly contrasts wealthy American expats with Filipina domestic workers who serve them, and it shows the 2014 Hong Kong democracy protests. It also raises race, colorism, class, privilege, and the question of who gets called an expat. These ideas matter to several episodes, but grief and personal responsibility remain the main story.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Expats.
Woke representation / casting
The main cast centers on a white American mother, an Indian-American woman, and a Korean-American woman. The show also gives major roles to an Asian husband, Filipina domestic workers, Hong Kong locals, and a Hong Kong woman in a romantic role. This mix fits the international Hong Kong setting, so it does not look like an impossible one-of-each group. The repeated focus on women and Asian identities still makes representation a visible production choice.
35%
Woke political dialogue
Episode 1 includes a brief protest chant calling for real elections. Episode 5 gives the 2014 Umbrella Movement a major subplot as students debate exams, democracy, and personal duty, and police arrest a student. Later scenes keep the protests in the background while characters discuss who has the privilege to leave Hong Kong. The political talk is clear but smaller than the grief and family drama.

Identity-driven story themes
Motherhood, female independence, race, colorism, class, and expat identity recur across the season. Hilary questions whether she wants children while facing pressure from her husband and mother. Mercy's pregnancy and relationship with Charly connect identity to hope, guilt, and personal choice. Episode 5 widens the story to Filipina workers and Hong Kong students.
58%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Episode 5 contrasts rich expat homes with Filipina helpers who leave their own families to care for other people's children. The women call the helpers family but still control their time, work, and choices. The show also contrasts Americans who can leave Hong Kong with local students who face arrest and workers who have fewer choices. The critique is recurring, but the show does not focus mainly on attacking men, Christianity, or Western culture.
40%
Woke character or canon changes
The show changes Hilary into a South Asian woman and changes Charly from a boy in the novel into a girl. The show also presents Margaret's husband Clarke as Asian. Charly's new role creates Mercy's same-sex romance, while Hilary's background adds South Asian family and colorism themes. These are clear identity changes, but they shape character histories and a side relationship rather than the whole plot.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No reports connect the show to anti-woke complaints about woke, DEI, or identity politics. The separate X review found no anti-woke reaction or specific complaints.

Creator track record context
Cached context describes Lulu Wang's focus on Asian identity and authentic representation. Vera Miao brings queer and marginalized-perspective work, while Alice Bell supports women writers and Julia Kim is known for diversity-focused casting. Other writers and producers have worked on cross-cultural, feminist, Asian-American, or women-led projects. This supports the show's visible choices, but it does not prove that every story point is activist.
