2016–2017 · Based on 1 season, 16 episodes through January 21, 2017 · · Korean
Guardian: The Lonely and Great God follows Kim Shin, a Goryeo general who is punished with endless life and a sword stuck in his chest. In modern Seoul, he searches for the human bride who can remove the sword and let him die. He shares a house with a forgetful Grim Reaper and later takes in Ji Eun Tak, a poor high school girl who can see ghosts. The show mixes romance, jokes, ghosts, old battles, and sad questions about death, memory, fate, and the value of ordinary life.
The story gives Eun Tak a supernatural role in ending Kim Shin’s curse, and it lets her choose a sacrifice to save children. Sunny owns a restaurant and says that even God must let her take charge of her life. These are personal choices inside a fantasy about fate and reincarnation, not a repeated campaign about gender or identity. The main cast is Korean, and the Korean folklore setting gives no clear diversity campaign or Western political message.
