2020 · Based on 1 season, 10 episodes through August 21, 2020 ·
Hoops follows Ben Hopkins, a foul-mouthed high school basketball coach in a small Kentucky town. Ben dreams of coaching in the big leagues, but his weak team and his own anger keep ruining his plans. He tries to recruit Matty, a seven-foot student, and turns every problem into a reckless scheme. The show uses crude adult jokes, sex jokes, insults, and cartoon violence in a loud and mean style.
The team includes Scott, a gay player whose past relationships become the focus of a bullying plot in “Zen.” Ben finally defends Scott by saying that playing basketball does not make him less gay. The show also follows Ben’s broken marriage, his fight with his father, a teacher strike, grief, and the team’s struggle to stay together. The identity-driven story is limited to Scott’s subplot, while the rest of the season stays focused on crude jokes, bad choices, and basketball.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Hoops.
Woke representation / casting
The team uses a noticeable lineup of identity labels, including a black player, a gay player, and a Jewish player. Opal is a black female principal, and Ron is a black assistant coach. The show does not present this cast mix as a diversity goal, and the setting makes it broadly believable, so the score stays low.
15%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The show does not make current political ideas or activist causes part of its regular dialogue. The teacher strike and school problems are used for jokes, not as a repeated political message.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Scott is a gay player on Ben’s team. Scott’s past relationships drive the bullying plot in “Zen,” and the episode says that his sport and dating history do not change his identity. Ben defends Scott when other students call him fake. The show returns to Scott in other episodes, but his identity remains a side plot rather than the season’s main story.
33%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Ben’s repeated male entitlement and cruel treatment of women are clear parts of the comedy. The show makes him foolish and harmful, which gives a mild critique of macho behavior. The story does not turn that joke into a wider activist attack on men, family, or Western institutions.
12%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Hoops is an original series with no established characters, canon, or real historical events that it changes.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Public complaints focused on crude humor, poor writing, sexism, racism, or homophobia. No substantial anti-woke complaint about DEI, identity politics, or activist messaging was found.
0%
Creator track record context
Ben Hoffman is known for raunchy satire and free-speech themes, not activist or identity-driven work. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are linked to broad comedy and crowd-pleasing entertainment. Their title interviews focus on basketball, joke writing, and crude fun, with no diversity-first framing for Hoops.
