2016–2017 · Based on 1 season, 39 episodes through June 19, 2017 · · Turkish
Insider is a Turkish crime drama set in modern Istanbul. Sarp Yılmaz is a top student at the police academy, but the police remove him after his father’s criminal past comes to light. Sarp then enters crime boss Celal’s group as an undercover officer while he searches for the brother he believes is dead. That brother is Umut, now called Mert, a police officer who secretly serves Celal without knowing Sarp is family, so the show mixes gun fights, danger, romance, and family pain.
Across the season, the main struggle follows the brothers as they face each other from opposite sides of the law. Their mother waits for the son who disappeared, while the police try to stop Celal and his criminal network. Melek works as a lawyer and later becomes tied to Celal’s family, and Eylem works as a police reporter before becoming Mert’s love interest. The last episodes reveal the brothers’ link, bring the family back together, and punish Celal, leaving loyalty, revenge, justice, and family love as the show’s main ideas.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Insider.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The main cast fits a modern Turkish police and crime drama. The female characters work as a lawyer and a police reporter, but the show does not frame these choices as a diversity or identity statement.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The dialogue centers on family, loyalty, crime, love, work, and justice. The show does not use recurring identity, DEI, or activist speeches.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. The main story follows two separated brothers trying to recover their family and defeat a crime boss. The women have personal story roles, but the season does not build a repeated gender or identity message around them.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The show presents the police, law, family, and order as forces that should defeat the mafia. Corruption comes from individual criminals and officials, not from a modern activist attack on family, tradition, or Western institutions.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The show is a Turkish adaptation of The Departed. Its main changes add a Turkish setting, a brother story, and romance, not a race, gender, or sexuality message.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. News and audience complaints focused on long ad breaks, plot logic, and character deaths. No sustained complaint said the show pushed woke, DEI, or identity politics.

Creator track record context
Volkan Sümbül has a mild social-history signal in Yeşilçam, which covers censorship and minority experiences. Kerem Çatay has produced other dramas about sexual violence and social marginalization. Uluç Bayraktar, Toprak Karaoğlu, and Ertan Kurtulan are mainly linked to mainstream genre dramas. This background is weak and does not shape Insider.
