2022 · Based on 1 season, 6 episodes through May 4, 2022 ·
Steven Grant works in a London gift shop and keeps blacking out. He learns he shares a body with Marc Spector, a tough hired fighter who works for the Egyptian moon god Khonshu. Together they face Arthur Harrow, a cult leader who wants to free the goddess Ammit so she can punish people before they do wrong. The six-episode show mixes action, mystery, Egyptian gods, and a dark look at a man with many selves.
Viewers will mainly notice a clear push for Egyptian pride and a strong female co-lead, not nonstop modern politics. Layla El-Faouly is a skilled fighter and digger who becomes the MCU’s first Egyptian superhero, Scarlet Scarab, and a child on screen asks if she is an Egyptian hero. The show and its ads treat that moment as a big win for seeing yourself on screen. Marc’s wife is reworked from a white comic character into an Egyptian woman for that goal. The main story still centers on Marc and Steven’s mind, family pain, and the gods. There is little activist talk about race or gender, and no clear queer storyline. Some online fans grumbled that Layla got a “girl power” spotlight, but the show was not a big culture-war fight.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Moon Knight.
Woke representation / casting
Layla is a major, skilled Egyptian woman hero sold as the first Egyptian MCU superhero. Ads and interviews push that pride hard. The story moves between modern London and Egypt, so Egyptian and mixed casting often fits the places, but the focus on her as representation still stands out to a normal viewer.

Woke political dialogue

Identity-driven story themes
The big Layla beat where a child asks if she is an Egyptian superhero, and she says she is, is clear identity pride. The core plot is still Marc and Steven’s mind, trauma, and Egyptian gods, not lectures about modern race or gender politics.
32%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present in this title.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Marc’s wife is changed from white comic character Marlene into Egyptian Layla on purpose for Egyptian representation. Scarlet Scarab is reworked as a female Egyptian hero. Those are identity-driven changes; Jewish Marc and the DID focus are otherwise kept.
45%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Some fans said Layla stole the show with “girl power,” or linked the series to Disney diversity habits. That talk stayed mostly online and light. It was not a huge news backlash about the show pushing a full woke agenda.
18%
Creator track record context
Key names mix mid and higher scores: Slater and casting lead Finn lean toward representation and progressive genre choices; DeMayo scores high on identity-shaped work; Diab focuses on Egyptian authenticity. Many other writers score low. Overall crew context is moderate.
