2022 · Based on 1 season, 6 episodes through June 22, 2022 ·
Ten years after Order 66, broken exile Obi-Wan Kenobi leaves Tatooine to rescue kidnapped young Leia Organa from Imperial Inquisitors. The chase pulls him into conflict with Darth Vader and the ambitious Inquisitor Reva Sevander, also known as the Third Sister. Allies in the underground Path network help fugitives hide from the Empire. Across six episodes, the series centers grief, guilt, recovery of his Force connection, and facing the past. The main engine of the story is personal recovery and old tragedy, not modern identity politics.
Audience-visible woke elements are limited and sit mostly outside the core plot engine. New original roles include a black woman as co-lead antagonist with a full arc, plus other diverse major helpers and allies, and some coverage framed Reva’s natural hair as representation for Black kids. Mild story signals include young Leia often outmaneuvering adults and Reva’s arc taking heavy plot share, which some viewers felt sidelined Kenobi. There is no modern activist speech, no LGBTQ plot, and no attack on Western culture, churches, markets, or family norms. Empire tyranny and Path resistance use classic Star Wars anti-dictatorship language.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Woke representation / casting
Major original roles show a clear diverse cast pattern, especially Reva as co-lead villain with a full story arc. Supporting new characters also include key allies and helpers from varied backgrounds. Cast and marketing talk stressed natural hair so Black kids could dress up as Reva. The main stars stay McGregor and Christensen, and the faraway galaxy setting softens some of the weight, but the new-character mix still reads as diversity-first casting more than pure story need.
42%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. No modern activist, DEI, race or gender-identity, or social-justice speech. Empire oppression and Path resistance use classic Star Wars anti-tyranny language.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The core story is about trauma, guilt, recovery, and the broken bond between master and apprentice. It is not built around race, gender identity, or queer messaging. Mild signals include young Leia often outsmarting adults and Reva’s big share of the plot. Some viewers felt the show put her ahead of Kenobi. There is no LGBTQ plot in the series itself.
14%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. Empire-as-tyranny and underground rescue network are franchise-standard anti-dictatorship storytelling, not modern activist attacks on Western culture, Christianity, capitalism, patriarchy, or whiteness.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Reva, Tala, Haja, and the Path are new. Debates about young Leia meeting Obi-Wan early or Grand Inquisitor continuity are ordinary adaptation complaints, not identity-driven rewrites of established figures.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Many fans called Reva a diversity hire and said the show pushed DEI over Obi-Wan’s story. That framing spread on boards and social media during and after the run. Some abuse of the actress was racist, and the studio and McGregor condemned it. Only the diversity-hire and agenda complaints count toward this score. The volume and franchise response were large, even if the series was not seen as full woke propaganda.
58%
Creator track record context
Cached scores for the director, writers, and most producers stay mild or low. The casting director scores higher for diverse-talent priority. George Lucas is a radical-liberal legacy source on paper, not the day-to-day boss of this series. Overall this is light supporting context, not an activist team leading with identity politics.
