2019–2022 · Based on 3 seasons through November 24, 2022 ·
Young Alfred Pennyworth comes home to London after serving in the British SAS. He starts a security company and gets pulled into secret plots with Thomas Wayne and Martha Kane. The story takes place in an alternate 1960s and 1970s Britain, where rival groups fight over the government. The tone mixes crime, spy action, dark jokes, bloody violence, and strange science.
Several strong women hold power, lead fights, and drive major plots. Bet Sykes is a lesbian villain, and her romance with Katie Browning becomes a clear story thread in season two. The show also uses socialist and democratic groups against a fascist government, but those ideas serve the alternate-history war. The main story still follows Alfred's work, loyalty, family ties, and survival.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman's Butler.
Woke representation / casting
The show gives repeated prominent roles to women who fight, lead groups, or make key plans, including Martha, Bet, Peggy, and the Queen. Bet is a prominent lesbian villain, and season two adds her romance with Katie Browning. Actors of color also play important supporting characters such as Bazza, Katie, Aziz, and Lucius Fox. The alternate-history setting makes the casting less clearly tied to modern diversity messaging, so the signal is visible but limited.
25%
Woke political dialogue
The No Name League openly seeks a socialist utopia, while the Raven Society and Raven Union use fascist rule. Characters also discuss martial law, national cleansing, state power, and civil war. The political talk is recurring and visible, but it belongs to the show's alternate-history conflict rather than modern activist speeches.
18%
Identity-driven story themes
Bet Sykes is a lesbian, and season two gives her relationship with Katie Browning a continuing subplot. The relationship affects Bet's break from the Raven Union and her move toward the resistance. The show also presents Martha, Bet, Peggy, and other women as unusually capable in a period action story. These ideas are visible, but Alfred's crime, loyalty, and war story remain the main focus.
22%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The show attacks fascist leaders, corrupt officials, and abusive spies as plot enemies in an alternate Britain. It does not turn those events into a modern critique of Western culture, Christianity, family life, or traditional social rules.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The show changes the Batman timeline and gives Thomas and Martha a daughter named Samantha. No identity or DEI message is attached to those adaptation changes.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
A few tiny X accounts call the series a political woke TV show or say it adopted modern woke themes. The posts have little reach, and no boycott, review-bomb drive, or organized campaign appears in the available search. Broader coverage talks about the Batman prequel, its strange tone, and its cancellation rather than an anti-woke dispute.
12%
Creator track record context
Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon have low recorded woke scores and mainly make crime, action, and historical drama. Their Pennyworth interviews discuss Alfred rising beyond his working-class background, which adds a mild class signal. The available creator record shows no clear activist or identity-first pattern.
