2016 · Based on 1 season, 5 episodes through March 27, 2016 ·
Thirteen follows Ivy Moxam, a 26-year-old woman who escapes after being locked in a cellar for 13 years. She returns to her family in Bristol, but her parents have split, her sister has grown up, and her old love is married. Two detectives question Ivy while they search for the man who held her and may have taken another girl. The tone is tense, sad, and uneasy because Ivy’s memories and choices do not always make sense.
Ivy’s main fight is learning how to live as an adult after her life stopped at 13. The show keeps returning to male control, the loss of a woman’s identity, and the pressure placed on her by family, police, and the press. A supporting friend, Eloise, is shown as bisexual, but that part stays small beside Ivy’s trauma and the crime plot. Ivy finally uses her own judgment to face Mark and protect Phoebe, giving the ending a clear theme of survival and personal choice.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Thirteen.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The show has a female lead and a female detective, but those choices fit the story and setting. The cast is not presented as a diversity-first statement.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The characters discuss the kidnapping, family conflict, police work, and trauma. They do not give current activist or party-political speeches.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The series repeatedly centers Ivy’s struggle to rebuild her identity after a man controls her life for 13 years. The story gives supporting friend Eloise a bisexual identity, but that part appears only briefly. The creator frames the project around what happens to women after the public leaves. Ivy’s final choices show personal survival and control over her choices rather than a wider identity-political campaign.
27%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The police make serious mistakes and sometimes treat Ivy like a suspect. The drama uses those failures to build the crime plot, not to attack Western institutions or present a modern activist critique.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Thirteen is an original story about Ivy Moxam, so it does not change an established character, canon, or historical figure.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Reviews and audience discussion focus on the crime plot, Jodie Comer’s performance, police mistakes, and loose plot threads. No clear anti-woke or anti-DEI complaint appears in the reviewed material.

Creator track record context
Marnie Dickens has a mild female-protagonist track record and a cached score of 26/100. Vanessa Caswill has a mild women-focused track record and a cached score of 28/100. China Moo-Young has a stronger cached score of 75/100 because of public work on gender equity and diversity. The other cached crew scores are low or mild, so the overall context is mixed rather than dominant.
