2025 · Based on 1 season, 10 episodes through April 3, 2025 ·
PULSE follows Dr. Danielle “Danny” Simms, a third-year emergency resident at a busy Miami trauma hospital. A hurricane, a school bus crash, and a flood of patients arrive just after the hospital’s chief resident, Xander Phillips, is suspended over Danny’s sexual harassment report. Danny must lead the emergency room while staff members argue over what happened and her own secret romance with Xander. The show mixes medical emergencies with romance, family pain, workplace gossip, and soap-opera twists.
The clearest woke element is the season-long story about a woman reporting a powerful male boss and asking the hospital to recognize that their romance still involved an unfair power balance. The show returns to consent, pressure, workplace rules, and the cost of speaking up, but it keeps both characters morally mixed and ends with them admitting love. The staff also includes a wheelchair-using emergency resident, and Sophie develops romantic feelings for her female friend Camila, although Camila is engaged to a man. These points are visible, but the show spends more time on romance and medical drama than on broad political speeches or activist campaigns.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for PULSE.
Woke representation / casting
Maguire has a mixed staff with several Latino doctors, a black resident, and a wheelchair-using emergency resident. The Latino leadership fits Miami’s large Latino population, so the ethnic casting does not look like a mismatch. The wheelchair-using doctor is played by a disabled actor, which adds a small representation signal. The show does not present its cast as a diversity campaign.
18%
Woke political dialogue
Danny’s report leads to repeated talks about sexual harassment, consent, HR, and the power held by a chief resident. Staff members argue over whether her report should be trusted and whether her career should suffer. The season treats the issue as a workplace problem rather than a party-political debate. The dialogue does not grow into broad activist speeches.
31%
Identity-driven story themes
The main story follows a woman who reports a male superior after a secret romance turns harmful because he controls her work future. Danny wants the hospital to admit that love and an unfair power balance can exist at the same time. The season shows rumors, pressure, consent, and the career cost of speaking up across many episodes. The show keeps Danny and Xander morally mixed and reunites them emotionally, which softens the message.
46%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The hospital system lets Xander’s powerful family pressure leaders over Danny’s job. Xander also uses his senior role in ways that put Danny’s career and choices under pressure. The season presents these workplace rules and male power as harmful, and it also shows Tom facing punishment for a relationship with a patient. The story does not attack Christianity, family life, capitalism, or Western culture as a whole.

Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. PULSE is an original medical drama. It does not change a known character, canon, or real event.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
A few small right-leaning X accounts called the pilot anti-male, female-empowerment politics, or “DEI crap.” Another small account assumed the female lead would always be right and called the preview woke. The search found no large boycott, hashtag campaign, or review-bombing wave. The reaction was fringe and does not prove that the complaints were fair.
12%
Creator track record context
Zoe Robyn has no documented activist or identity-politics record. Kate Dennis has a moderate feminist and social-issue record and has supported more chances for women behind the camera. Carlton Cuse and the other listed producers have low to mild scores and no strong activist profile. Robyn and Cuse frame the show around workplace power and a complicated romance.
