2020–2022 · Based on 2 seasons through December 29, 2022 ·
Rise of Empires: Ottoman follows Sultan Mehmed II as he fights to take Constantinople in 1453. The first season shows the young ruler facing Emperor Constantine XI, rival commanders, strong walls, and doubt in his own court. The second season jumps to 1462, when Mehmed faces Vlad the Impaler in Wallachia after the two men grow up together in the Ottoman court. The show mixes acted battle scenes with historians who explain the events, so the tone is serious, violent, and grand.
Mehmed stays at the center, and the story presents his drive, faith, fears, and military skill as the main force behind both campaigns. Mara Branković serves as a trusted adviser and negotiator, while Gülbahar Hatun helps protect the palace in the second season. These women have useful roles, but the show presents them as period figures tied to court politics, family, diplomacy, and survival. The main themes are empire, religion, loyalty, revenge, royal power, and the harsh cost of war.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Rise of Empires: Ottoman.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The main cast uses Turkish, Balkan, Italian, and Romanian performers for figures from those regions and periods. Women such as Mara and Gülbahar have useful roles, but the show does not frame their casting as a diversity or identity campaign.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The dialogue covers succession, war, faith, taxes, alliances, and empire. The characters do not use modern activist or left-wing political language.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. The story follows Ottoman expansion, Christian and Muslim rulers, loyalty, revenge, and military survival. The story does not build its main conflict around modern race, gender, sexuality, or identity politics.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The show shows Christian rulers, churches, and European powers as rivals in a medieval war. It does not turn those conflicts into a modern attack on Western culture, patriarchy, capitalism, or family life.
5%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The show dramatizes some events and gives Mara a larger court role, but the changes serve the historical drama. No clear identity-driven rewrite of a historical figure or event is reported.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
A low-engagement post used the phrase political propaganda and objected to Mehmed being shown as empathic while the Christian world is shown as savage. This is a weak anti-left complaint, not a clear claim about DEI, race, gender, or sexuality. Other right-leaning posts praised the series as a non-woke alternative. The reaction was fringe, with no evidence of a boycott or review-bombing.
