2016–2019 · Based on 3 seasons through April 5, 2019 ·
Roman Empire is a three-season anthology about rulers who shaped ancient Rome. Season one follows Commodus as he inherits power from Marcus Aurelius and turns toward violence, games, and fear. Season two follows Julius Caesar as his victories, wealth, and popularity destroy the old Republic and bring him into conflict with Pompey and the Senate. Season three follows Caligula from a frightened child under Tiberius to a ruler whose paranoia, spending, and cruelty bring his death. The show uses expert interviews, narration, reenactments, and a dark, bloody tone.
The show centers on family power, military glory, sexual scandal, slavery, and the danger of rule by one man. Lucilla, Cleopatra, Agrippina, and Caligula's other sisters take part in court plots and succession fights, but their roles come from the ancient stories being told. Caesar's conquest of Gaul and Caligula's attacks on the Senate are shown as struggles for power, not as modern political lessons. Later episodes give Caligula's harsh childhood more weight as an explanation for his crimes. The series is most likely to trouble viewers through its violence, nudity, incest claims, and rough treatment of history.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Roman Empire.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The series uses historical figures such as Lucilla, Cleopatra, Agrippina, and the three emperors. Their gender and background are part of the ancient stories, and the cast list shows no clear diversity-first message or repeated identity pattern.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The dialogue covers wars, Senate fights, taxes, treason laws, and one-man rule. It stays inside the Roman setting and does not use modern identity or activist language.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. The stories focus on dynastic power, sexual scandal, violence, slavery, and betrayal. Caligula's affairs with his sisters and the women's court roles are shown as ancient events, not as a modern identity message.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The series condemns emperors, senators, and military leaders for cruelty and greed. Those are story conflicts about ancient power, and the show does not attack modern men, family life, Christianity, or Western culture.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The show changes or fills in uncertain history for drama, including claims about Tiberius's death and Caligula's affairs with his sisters. No identity-driven change to a known character or source is presented.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The separate X pass found no anti-woke reaction or specific complaints. Other web discussion focuses on historical accuracy, acting, the docudrama format, and production quality. No clear complaint says the show pushes DEI, identity politics, or activist ideas.
0%
Creator track record context
David O'Neill has a cached woke score of 0/100 and no high-confidence activist record. Richard Lopez has a cached woke score of 15/100 and held political roles with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Nancy Pelosi, and the Clinton administration. That background gives only mild context, and no evidence links it to woke content in this title.
