Scam 1992 follows Harshad Mehta, a young broker from a middle-class Gujarati family in 1980s Bombay. He rises from a small job on the stock exchange to become the famous “Big Bull” of Dalal Street. He uses bank loopholes, borrowed money, and powerful contacts to build a huge fortune. Journalist Sucheta Dalal then investigates him, and the story moves from fast success to fraud, pressure, and collapse. The tone is tense, lively, and sometimes sympathetic toward a man who keeps breaking the rules.
The show gives Sucheta a major role as a sharp financial reporter who fights to publish the truth. A short scene says that entering a field with few women can help break stereotypes, and another joke says women cannot be common. These lines give the show a small gender and empowerment message, but they do not drive the main plot. Most of the story follows ambition, greed, class, business power, weak rules, and the cost of making one man into a hero. The ending asks whether Harshad was only a criminal or also a product of a broken system.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The show uses Indian actors for real Indian people in 1980s and 1990s Bombay. Pratik Gandhi is Gujarati like Harshad Mehta, and Shreya Dhanwanthary plays the real journalist Sucheta Dalal.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Episode 2 has a clear gender message when Sucheta’s editor asks why she wants a career in a field with few women. Sucheta says that breaking stereotypes helps society and calls herself the first female financial journalist. Episode 6 adds a joke about the “Common Man” cartoon and says women are always special. These are short moments in a story mostly about finance and crime, so the political dialogue is noticeable but limited.
30%
Identity-driven story themes
Sucheta Dalal is a real woman who investigates Harshad and helps bring the fraud to light. The show gives her a serious work story and follows her push to publish while editors and officials resist the report. Her goal is linked to breaking stereotypes about women in finance. The main story still follows Harshad’s ambition, greed, and fall, so the identity-driven theme remains a smaller part of the whole show.
32%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The show exposes fraud inside banks, regulators, and politics during the 1992 scandal. It does not turn this historical finance story into a modern attack on Western culture, religion, family life, or identity groups.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Harshad Mehta, Sucheta Dalal, and the other named public figures keep their real names and roles. Some events are dramatized, but no identity-based change is clearly present.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The X research found no anti-woke complaints. A few right-leaning accounts praised the show as free of unnecessary woke scenes, and no boycott or organized campaign was found.
0%
Creator track record context
Director Hansal Mehta has a strong record of stories about social harm and unfair systems. Writer Sumit Purohit and casting director Mukesh Chhabra also have some justice or access themes in their wider work. Jai Mehta and the other credited writers have no strong activist record in the supplied context. This context partly fits the show’s sympathetic outsider and institutional criticism, but it is not the main message.
