2022–2023 · Based on 2 seasons through May 10, 2023 ·
Single Drunk Female follows Samantha Fink, a talented but reckless 20-something writer whose drinking ends with a public fight at her New York job. A court order sends her back to her mother Carol in a Boston suburb, where she attends AA, works at a grocery store, and tries to avoid jail. Sam must face old friends, a former boyfriend, grief over her father, and the damage she caused while drunk. The show mixes sharp jokes with sad family scenes and a steady story about learning to live sober.
Sam is bisexual, and the show treats that as a normal part of her life rather than a special lesson. Her AA sponsor Olivia is a lesbian married to Stephanie, while Sam's grocery boss Mindy is trans and gets a personal coming-out story. Season two adds a drag-queen interview and keeps the show's focus on queer people, sober support, and friendship. These identity elements recur across both seasons, but Sam's main struggle remains addiction, honesty, family, and the hard work of recovery.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Single Drunk Female.
Woke representation / casting
The cast repeatedly puts queer, trans, and black characters in visible roles. Sam is bisexual, Olivia is a lesbian with a wife, Mindy is trans, and season two brings in Bob the Drag Queen. Black friends and coworkers also hold major roles, including Brit, Felicia, and James. The modern Boston setting can support much of this mix, but the repeated queer and trans choices show a clear representation focus.
52%
Woke political dialogue
Sam blames her male boss's reaction on the patriarchy in the pilot. Sam warns that Brit may be treated unfairly as a black woman when a guard stops her in season two. Mindy gives a longer speech about coming out, family reaction, and self-hatred in the finale. These identity and bias points appear in several episodes, but they do not drive most scenes.
36%
Identity-driven story themes
Sam's bisexuality appears in her dating life without becoming her only trait. Olivia's marriage to Stephanie and their fertility treatment return through season one and the season two baby shower. Mindy's trans identity links her recovery to fear, family acceptance, and coming out in a season two speech. The show gives Sam a season two work story about interviewing drag performer Bob the Drag Queen. Recovery stays the main plot, so identity themes are strong side threads rather than the central premise.
55%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Sam says the patriarchy could not handle her honesty after she attacks her male boss in the pilot. Sam also raises possible racial bias when a guard stops Brit in a store. The show does not build these moments into a broad attack on family, religion, or Western institutions.
20%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The show is an original story about a fictional woman and her family. It does not change an earlier character, source, or historical event.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. One forum user called the show too woke, but the complaint did not name a scene, identity message, or political claim. No clear anti-woke backlash was reported in the main coverage reviewed.
0%
Creator track record context
Leslye Headland has an openly queer creative record that supports the show's identity content. Chloe Keenan has repeated credits on queer and trans-inclusive shows. Aminatou Sow has a strong public record of feminist, race, gender, and civic work. Simone Finch and several producers have more ordinary comedy records, so the combined creator context is moderate rather than dominant.
