2017–2018 · Based on 1 season, 13 episodes through January 29, 2018 ·
Captain Adam Dalton leads a secret Defense Intelligence Agency team that rescues hostages and stops terrorist attacks around the world. The field unit works with Deputy Director Patricia Campbell and her analysts in Washington. Dalton faces missions that involve kidnappings, bomb plots, spies, and threats from groups such as ISIS and the Taliban. The tone is fast, serious, and strongly supportive of military service, with action scenes mixed with grief, loyalty, and the cost of combat.
The show gives major roles to a female sniper, a black former Navy SEAL, and Amir Al-Raisani, a Muslim intelligence officer whose faith is shown through prayer and his fight against extremists. Patricia is a powerful woman who directs missions, and Jaz talks about the extra work it took to reach an elite combat role. The pilot and a prison episode use direct lines about prejudice, gender equality, and the link between big business and war. These ideas add a mild focus on representation and criticism of U.S. power, but the season remains mainly a patriotic military action drama about duty, teamwork, and saving lives.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Brave.
Woke representation / casting
The field team includes a female sniper, a black former Navy SEAL, and Amir Al-Raisani, a Muslim intelligence officer. A woman, Patricia Campbell, leads the DIA office that controls the missions. Creator Dean Georgaris said he chose Jaz, Preach, and Amir because he had not seen characters like them on television. The show still centers a white male captain, so the identity pattern is clear but not dominant.
35%
Woke political dialogue
The pilot includes direct talk about prejudice against Muslim Americans. Jaz says reaching an elite combat role was harder because she is a woman, and Dalton agrees. In “Break Out,” an American traitor accuses the U.S. of bombing civilians and hiding greed behind human rights, while Patricia answers with freedom of speech and gender equality. Most dialogue still covers missions, duty, and patriotism.
28%
Identity-driven story themes
The series gives Amir a continuing story about being a Muslim agent who fights extremists because they twist his faith. The pilot and later missions also treat prejudice against Muslims as a problem the team must overcome. Jaz’s role adds a smaller theme about a woman proving herself in an elite combat unit. The season’s main story remains rescue missions, terrorism, loyalty, and military duty.
28%
Western institutional / cultural critique
“Break Out” contains a direct attack on the U.S. government and big business. An American traitor says the government is controlled by business and uses human rights to hide greed, and he calls soldiers part of a killing machine. Patricia does not fully reject the charge, but the show still treats the U.S. team as heroes. This critique is clear but is mainly one episode rather than the season’s main message.
28%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The Brave is an original NBC series with invented characters and missions. It does not change a known character, older story, or real historical figure.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
One review called the pilot preachy and politically correct. The review objected to the Muslim prejudice exchange, the female sniper’s gender-bias dialogue, and the diverse team design. A conservative review instead praised the show’s American military heroes, and the separate X check found no anti-woke complaints. The evidence is limited to this isolated criticism.
12%
Creator track record context
Stored creator context rates Dean Georgaris 11, Tessa Blake 27, Brad Anderson 13, and Mike Daniels 0. Blake’s support for women filmmakers is the only identity-related item in the stored profiles, and no wider activist record is listed. Georgaris, Anderson, and Daniels are mainly linked to thrillers and television dramas. The group gives only weak creator track record context.
