The Crew is a workplace comedy set inside a struggling NASCAR team in Charlotte, North Carolina. Kevin Gibson is the team's loyal, old-school crew chief, and he wants to protect the workers who have stood by him. When owner Bobby Spencer retires, his daughter Catherine takes control and brings a numbers-first plan to a garage that depends on old habits. Kevin fears that new ideas will cost him his job, while Catherine wants better results and more money. The tone stays light, loud, and built around insults, racing jokes, dating problems, and a close group that acts like family.
The main woke element is a repeated story about gender and change in a male-heavy sport. Catherine is a young female owner who is shown as smart and business-minded, while Jessie is a young female driver who challenges Jake for his seat. Catherine openly says that sponsors like having a woman in the car, so the show links the casting choice to attention and sales as well as racing skill. The season also makes old male habits look foolish, including Bobby's past use of the word skirts and Kevin's resistance to a younger woman who is his boss. The show gives both sides flaws, and its final lesson is that old experience and new ideas must work together.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Crew.
Woke representation / casting
The show places a young woman in charge of the team and brings in Jessie as a young female driver. Catherine says sponsors like having a woman in the car, so the choice is partly shown as a public identity and marketing move. Both women have story reasons for their jobs, and the rest of the cast is a normal mixed workplace group rather than a clear one-of-each lineup. The repeated focus on two prominent female roles gives this a mild casting signal.
24%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The show has no repeated activist or identity-politics speeches. It briefly mentions climate change in a joke about an algae business, but it does not build a political argument around it.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Catherine's modern plan and Jessie's challenge to Jake form the season's main ongoing conflict. The story repeatedly links female leadership and a female driver to the future of the team. Catherine is capable but also rude and often wrong, while Jessie must prove herself after a poor first race. The show also briefly mentions a gay man who once dated Kevin, but that part is not central.
30%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The show repeatedly makes fun of old male habits that resist Catherine because she is younger and female. Bobby admits that he once called women “skirts” until a lawyer stopped him. Kevin and Jake often resist women in authority or make sex-based jokes. Catherine also makes harsh choices and is not always right, so the story offers mild gender-role criticism without attacking men or Western institutions as a whole.
22%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The show uses original fictional NASCAR characters. It does not change an established character, canon, or real historical event.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
One IMDb user objected to what was called a large dose of feminism from the female boss and driver. A few Reddit comments also disliked the female driver, but most complaints focused on weak comedy and the laugh track. No broad public campaign called the show woke or treated it as major political propaganda. The evidence is limited and mixed.
12%
Creator track record context
Jeff Lowell and Pete Correale are mainly sitcom and comedy writers with no high-confidence activist record. Kevin James and the listed producers have mainstream comedy and sports credits, with little public evidence of identity-driven politics. One producer has a limited inclusion-focused sports documentary credit, but it does not show a broad pattern.
