2018–2020 · Based on 4 seasons through June 13, 2020 ·
Alexa Mendoza is a lively high school student who is trying to live normally after cancer treatment. Her best friend Katie Cooper stays beside her as they start high school in the small Virginia town of Wellard. Alexa worries that classmates will treat her differently, while Katie worries about losing her closest friend. The show uses bright jokes, family problems, school drama, dating, and tender moments to keep the cancer story gentle and hopeful. The series puts two teenage girls and their friendship at the center of every part. Alexa's Filipino-American background and her Korean-American father are visible in the lead family, while Reagan is a recurring black friend in the school group. A junior-year episode also treats Hannah's two mothers as a normal part of her life. These identity details stay in the background, while cancer recovery, anxiety, college choices, romance, and the girls' changing friendship drive the story.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Alexa & Katie.
Woke representation / casting
Paris Berelc, a Filipino-American actress, plays Alexa, and Eddie Shin, a Korean-American actor, plays her father. Iman Benson also plays Reagan, a recurring black friend in the school group. The show does not make these identities a stated cause or message, so the visible pattern is a light representation signal rather than a major theme.
15%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The four parts focus on school, family, cancer, friendship, dating, anxiety, and college. The brief talk about girls supporting one another is ordinary friendship talk, not political or activist dialogue.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Hannah is shown as having two mothers in a junior-year episode. The show treats that family setup as an ordinary background detail. The show does not build a continuing plot around sexuality or identity, and cancer recovery, friendship, school, romance, and college remain the main story.
18%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. School rules, parents, dating, and jobs create ordinary sitcom problems. The story does not treat men, families, religion, or Western culture as oppressive systems.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Alexa & Katie is an original Netflix sitcom, not an adaptation of a known story, historical event, or legacy character.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The X search found no anti-woke posts or boycott talk about the show. Other coverage and fan posts centered on friendship, cancer, anxiety, romance, and the emotional ending rather than DEI or activist claims.
0%
Creator track record context
Not present. Heather Wordham is known for family sitcom work and has no documented activist record. The listed writers and directors also have mostly traditional comedy credits and no documented pattern of identity-driven storytelling.
