2017–2024 · Based on 7 seasons through May 16, 2024 ·
Young Sheldon follows Sheldon Cooper, a child genius who starts high school in East Texas at age nine. He loves science, but he struggles to understand people and often thinks he is smarter than everyone around him. His family includes his Baptist mother Mary, his football-coach father George, his twin sister Missy, his older brother Georgie, and his grandmother Meemaw. The show mixes family jokes with warm and sometimes sad stories as Sheldon grows up in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
The clearest theme is the repeated clash between Sheldon’s science-based doubts and Mary’s Christian faith. One episode turns his fight over school money into a class election and a joke about removing “under God” from the Pledge. The show also follows family pressure around teen pregnancy, marriage, church life, money, and George’s death. Later seasons give more time to Georgie, Mandy, Missy, Mary, and Meemaw, so the story becomes more of a family drama while keeping its comic tone.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Young Sheldon.
Woke representation / casting

0%
Woke political dialogue
One episode centers on Sheldon running for class president after arguing that the school should spend less on football and more on science. Sheldon then says he would remove “under God” from the Pledge to honor separation of church and state. The episode treats the issue as a joke and a school election lesson, not as current activist messaging.

Identity-driven story themes

Western institutional / cultural critique
The show repeatedly uses Sheldon’s atheist jokes to question church rules, religious claims, and Christian symbols. One episode has him push for separation of church and state by removing “under God” from the Pledge. Some church members treat Mary harshly when she breaks with them. Mary still finds comfort in faith, so the show presents a family and church conflict rather than a full attack on Christianity.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
NewsBusters published two complaints that the show mocks Christianity through Sheldon’s atheist jokes and called it hostile to Christians. The articles objected to lines about crucifixes, God, and religion. I found no major backlash about DEI, race, gender, queer themes, or representation-first casting. The reaction was narrow and came from a small conservative outlet.
12%
Creator track record context
Chuck Lorre has repeatedly criticized conservative politicians through vanity cards, which gives him a mild liberal context. Bill Prady has occasional political involvement but no identity-driven pattern. Most other listed creators have no strong activist record. Interview coverage about Young Sheldon focused on talent, family, science, and faith rather than political or representation goals.
