The Mechanism is a Brazilian crime drama about the Car Wash corruption investigation. Federal police officer Marco Ruffo becomes obsessed with a money laundering case after threats push him out of the force. Ten years later, his former trainee Verena Cardoni leads the case through banks, building firms, courts, and government offices. The show uses a tense thriller style with dark humor, police work, family strain, and repeated explanations of how bribery moves through public life.
Verena is a capable female police leader in a field shown as mostly male, and season two gives her more control of the investigation. Her romance with prosecutor Claudio and her personal losses add drama, while a black officer named Vander faces moral pressure as he sees how the system affects his life and community. These identity elements support a visible message about women and black life, but they remain side stories beside the corruption plot. The strongest political message says that left and right parties, companies, courts, and media can all feed the same machine, and season two presents the impeachment and rise of a right-wing lawmaker in a darker light.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Mechanism.
Woke representation / casting
Verena Cardoni is a prominent female federal police leader, and season two makes her the main active investigator. Caroline Abras framed the role as showing female leadership in a mostly male police world. The character is based on real investigator Erika Marena, and the cast does not show a clear diversity-first pattern.
18%
Woke political dialogue
Ruffo repeatedly explains that the mechanism joins politicians, courts, and private money. The show presents the political game as rigged and treats party labels as cover for the same corrupt system. Season two presents the impeachment as a political deal and gives a Bolsonaro-like deputy a line about winning after 1964. The dialogue is strongly political and anti-establishment, but it is not mainly about identity or DEI.
34%
Identity-driven story themes
Verena moves from apprentice to mentor and leads a continuing investigation while working in a male-heavy police world. Season two gives her more power and openly frames her choices as female power. Vander’s story also discusses life as a black man from a poor neighborhood and the pressure of serving inside the system. These themes recur in season two, but corruption remains the main story.
39%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The show presents political parties, courts, builders, banks, and media as parts of one corrupt machine. It repeatedly links public money to private power and treats elections as a rigged game. Season two portrays the impeachment as a deal that helps corrupt politicians and shows the rise of a right-wing lawmaker as a dangerous result. The story attacks institutions and money, but it does not attack family life or Christianity.
46%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The show changes names, dates, and some lines from real events for drama, but no race, gender, sexuality, or identity-related canon change is confirmed.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
A Gazeta do Povo opinion piece called the first season left-wing and objected to its treatment of capitalism, Judge Moro, and the impeachment story. The piece did not grow into a sustained anti-woke campaign. The separate X pass found no anti-woke complaints, while a few right-leaning accounts praised the show as not woke, which is not backlash.
10%
Creator track record context
Elena Soarez has no clear activist or identity-focused public record in the cached profile. José Padilha and Marcos Prado are mainly tied to crime, inequality, corruption, and state power, while Daniel Rezende has a moderate recent representation signal. Malu Miranda has the clearest diversity and regional representation focus among the listed writers and directors. The overall creator track record is low to moderate.
