The Night Agent

The showrunner said the series would explore different dynamics between men and women in a professional setting. The story follows that idea through Rose, Diane, Chelsea, Catherine, Alice, and Isabel, who hold skilled jobs beside or above Peter. The plot does not make gender, race, or sexuality the main source of conflict. The spy missions and Peter’s moral choices remain the center, so the identity-driven material stays limited.

The book presents President Michael Travers as a man, but the series changes the role to President Michelle Travers. Shawn Ryan said the change followed the choice to make the vice president a man and to give the story a female president. The series also adds Chelsea and the vice president’s daughter, but those are new characters rather than changed book characters. The gender change is clear, but it supports the wider White House plot instead of becoming the main story.

One Daily Wire review called the show full of “woke clichés.” A mid-reach X post called Season 2 “woke GIRLBOSS garbage” because women surround Peter as partners, bosses, an assassin, a technology expert, and a president. Other small accounts used short “very woke” complaints, while more common right-leaning posts defended the show as not woke. No coordinated boycott, review-bombing effort, or large political campaign appeared.

Shawn Ryan and Matthew Quirk show little public activist or identity-driven work. Munis Rashid has discussed diversity mentoring and authentic Muslim representation. Millicent Shelton has emphasized inclusion in directing, and Paris Barclay has supported diversity and LGBTQ equality. Most of the other listed writers and directors have little public identity-focused activity. The wider team therefore adds a mild creator track record context, not a strong one.
