2022–2023 · Based on 1 season, 13 episodes through March 7, 2023 ·
John Winchester returns to Lawrence, Kansas, after fighting in Vietnam. He meets Mary Campbell, a young hunter who is searching for her missing father. They join Latika, Carlos, and Ada while they search for their families and fight demons and other monsters. Dean Winchester tells the story as the team faces the Akrida, creatures that want to destroy their world. The show mixes romance, horror, jokes, family pain, and a long mystery.
The show gives important roles to a nonbinary and bisexual hunter, a South Asian woman hunter, a Latino hunter, and a black magic expert. Carlos stays in the main hunting group, and his identity and love life return in several episodes. Lata's South Asian background gets clear attention, while Mary leads hunts and often outmatches John. These identity-driven choices shape the team, but the season still spends most of its time on monster cases, family secrets, romance, and the Akrida threat. John's war pain and Mary's wish to choose her own life add personal themes without turning the story into a political debate.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Winchesters.
Woke representation / casting
The 1972 Kansas group is built around several visible identity choices. Carlos is a nonbinary and bisexual Latino hunter. Lata is a South Asian hunter, and Ada is a black occult expert. The main roles and launch coverage make the mix look like a clear representation choice, not only a random set of side characters.
45%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The characters discuss war trauma, family secrets, and monster hunting. The season has no recurring modern activist or party-political speech.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The show makes Carlos a continuing member of the main hunting group. Carlos is nonbinary and bisexual, and his personal relationships return in more than one episode. Lata's Pakistani and Indian background gets clear attention, and her past shapes a later mystery. John and Mary still drive the romance and Akrida plot, so identity-driven themes are important but not the whole story.
48%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The show uses a secret hunter group and family conflicts for the monster plot. It does not build a modern activist attack on men, marriage, religion, capitalism, or Western institutions.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The show changes how John and Mary meet, but the finale explains the difference through an alternate universe and a multiverse story. The change is used for the supernatural plot and is not presented as an identity or DEI change.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
A few small X posts and user reviews call the show woke, forced, politically correct, or a diversity checklist. The complaints focus on Carlos, women of color, LGBT inclusion, and the 1970s setting. The posts had little reach, and there was no boycott, review-bomb campaign, or major right-leaning media push. This is fringe backlash rather than a broad public fight.
15%
Creator track record context
Eric Kripke has a moderate record of political satire and social commentary. Robbie Thompson has publicly supported diversity and inclusion in writing. Writer Rachel Lynett has a stronger queer and social-change focus than most of the other listed writers. Jensen and Danneel Ackles also used title interviews to support inclusive casting, so the combined creator context is moderately high.
