2017–2020 · Based on 3 seasons through December 24, 2020 ·
Jim Worth is a British police chief who moves his family from Liverpool to Little Big Bear in the Canadian Rockies. He hopes the quiet town will help him stay sober and leave his violent past behind. His drinking brings out Jack Devlin, a cruel and dangerous side of his personality. The family faces murder, crime, oil-company corruption, drug gangs, and old enemies. The show is dark, violent, strange, and often grimly funny.
The show has some social themes, but they are not its main focus. Season one presents a large oil company as a force that brings crime and corruption to a small town. Season two follows a religious Ammonite community, a Mexican cartel drug plot, and a family caught in violence. Season three moves to Liverpool and focuses on revenge against police and criminal figures from Jim’s past. The story is mainly about addiction, family loyalty, guilt, revenge, and the damage caused by violence.

Identity-driven story themes
Frank and Randy are shown as a male couple in the first season. Their relationship is visible, but it is tied to the crime plot and is not the main subject. Season two also follows an isolated religious community, but the story uses it for crime and family drama rather than identity messaging. These elements add a small identity signal without driving the series.

Western institutional / cultural critique
Season one repeatedly presents North Stream Oil as a powerful company linked to corruption, crime, and harm to the town. The refinery and its security chief create a clear anti-corporate thread. Season three also targets police power, criminal networks, and wealthy property plans in Liverpool. The show treats these groups as dangerous, but it does not build a wider modern activist case about capitalism or social identity.

Creator track record context
Nathaniel Price has a strong cached score because he adapted a story about an older Black Caribbean gay man. Paulette Randall has a strong history of supporting black representation in theatre. Rowan Joffé and most other listed directors have low or moderate cached scores, and no clear activist framing of Tin Star was found.
