2019–2022 · Based on 3 seasons through January 9, 2022 · · Dutch
Undercover follows Belgian police officer Bob Lemmens and Dutch agent Kim De Rooij as they pose as a couple at a campsite near the Belgian and Dutch border. They try to gather proof against drug boss Ferry Bouman while hiding their real lives from his family and crew. Season 2 moves Bob into an arms case at a horse ranch, while season 3 brings him back to Ferry to face a Turkish-Dutch drug gang and a police mole. The show mixes tense crime work with dark jokes, family trouble, betrayal, and violence.
The clearest woke element is the same-sex romance subplot in season 1, when Danielle develops romantic and sexual feelings for Kim's undercover identity. Kim uses those feelings to reach Ferry. Season 3 also puts Leyla Bulut, a Turkish-Dutch mother, in charge of a major drug gang while her husband and other men work under her power. The show presents these women as important and capable, but it does not turn their roles into speeches about rights, diversity, or politics. Most of the story stays focused on drugs, police corruption, crime, trust, family, and the cost of lying.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Undercover.
Woke representation / casting
Season 1 gives Kim a major undercover role beside Bob, and season 3 gives Leyla control of a large drug gang. The Turkish-Dutch gang fits the border setting and the plot, so the ethnicity choices do not look forced. Season 3 promotion still highlights Leyla as a female boss in a man's world and says such roles should appear more often. The wider cast is not built around a broad diversity message.
20%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The dialogue deals with crime, police work, family, and betrayal. It does not present a recurring argument about gender, identity, or DEI.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Season 1 spends several episodes on Danielle's romantic and sexual feelings for Kim's undercover identity. Kim acts on those feelings to influence Danielle and keep Ferry close, so the queer material affects the main case. Season 3 repeatedly centers Leyla as the feared leader of the gang while the men around her try to win or break her trust. These themes are visible and important, but they serve crime and family plots instead of a wider activist message.
50%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Season 2 repeatedly shows Laurent using his money and position to pressure Nathalie into a relationship she does not want. Nathalie resists him, and the story treats his behavior as abuse rather than romance. The plot also gives Nathalie a struggle to regain control of her life while Bob breaks rules to protect her. This creates a noticeable critique of male entitlement, but the show does not turn it into a broad attack on Western culture or family life.
35%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The series is an original crime story inspired by real events. No established character or historical figure is changed for an identity message.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No sustained anti-woke backlash was found in the coverage available through January 9, 2022. Viewers mainly complained about Ferry's smaller role and the different setting in season 2.

Creator track record context
The main creators have no clear activist or DEI pattern in their public work. Cecilia Verheyden has a strong record of LGBTQ and representation advocacy. Pieter Van Hees has a milder social-justice pattern, and Joost Vandecasteele has a left-leaning record. Most of the other listed creators have little known identity-focused work.
