2016–2021 · Based on 4 seasons ·
Billy McBride is a once-powerful lawyer who is burned out and spends more time in bars than courtrooms. He takes a wrongful death case against the biggest client of the huge firm he helped build. With a rough team he uncovers a deadly conspiracy. Later seasons put him against new corporate and political giants across four seasons and thirty-two episodes.
The show has a multiethnic professional cast that fits its modern California legal setting, and competent women are often in strong roles. Season 2 casting of a transgender actress as a judge was publicly framed as a representation milestone. A Season 1 lesbian or bisexual subplot involving Michelle McBride and Callie Senate is visible and plot-relevant but secondary. Core stories stay corporate conspiracy, corruption, water monopoly, and opioid Big Pharma rather than identity politics as the main engine.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Goliath.
Woke representation / casting
The cast is multiethnic and fits a modern California legal setting, with strong roles for women. Season 2 cast a transgender actress as a judge and framed that choice as a representation milestone. Identity is visible and industry-highlighted rather than pure story necessity, but the show is not a full quota series.
28%
Woke political dialogue
Talk centers on legal strategy, cover-ups, and personal trouble. It is not filled with activist race, gender, or DEI slogans. Creators publicly framed the series around corporate power and jury access, not identity slogans.
8%
Identity-driven story themes
Main plots are corporate conspiracy, cartel and political corruption, water monopoly, and Big Pharma opioids. A Season 1 queer subplot is clear and matters to the plot but stays secondary. Queer content raises this above none without making identity the engine.
22%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The series is little-guy versus big law, contractors, City Hall, agribusiness, and opioid makers. That is sustained critique of elite wealth and corporate capture of justice. It reads as classical liberal or populist David versus Goliath drama, not modern activist framing of whiteness or patriarchy.
25%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. This is an original series, not an adaptation of established characters or historical figures rewritten for DEI.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. There was no meaningful mainstream or social campaign treating the show as woke or DEI propaganda. Reaction was sparse, and some right-leaning viewers praised it as not woke.
0%
Creator track record context
David E. Kelley, Jonathan Shapiro, and listed producers sit mostly in the single digits to low teens. There is no documented pattern of identity-first producing on this title. Context supports a legal-thriller corporate focus.
