Zara Ford is a 24-year-old assistant in Los Angeles who works for Chris Cole, a famous action-movie star. Chris treats Zara like a servant, then begins dating her widowed mother, Brooke, a successful writer. Zara feels betrayed and fears that Chris will hurt Brooke as he has hurt other women. The film uses awkward sex jokes, family fights, and Hollywood silliness before moving toward a warm but uneven romance.
The film makes Brooke’s desire and dating life after widowhood a major part of the story. It asks Zara to see her mother as a whole woman with her own wants, not only as a parent. The movie also turns the usual older-man and younger-woman romance pattern around by making the older woman the romantic lead. That idea drives the central conflict, but the film presents it through jokes, dating scenes, and family arguments rather than a broad activist message.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for A Family Affair.
Woke representation / casting
Brooke and Chris are deliberately cast as an older woman and a younger man. Title interviews frame this pairing as a way to widen stories about women and move beyond the usual older-man pattern. The main cast is otherwise mostly white, with Liza Koshy and Sherry Cola in supporting friend roles that fit modern Los Angeles. The casting signal stays mild because the story uses the pairing for romance and does not present a wider identity campaign.
15%
Woke political dialogue
One filming scene uses #MeToo as a joke and tells Chris to show remorse for how he has used women. The joke is corrected by Zara, who says that is not what the term means. The exchange is brief and comic, and the film has no repeated political speeches.
8%
Identity-driven story themes
The central romance makes Brooke’s desire and dating life after widowhood part of the main story. Zara must learn that her mother is a woman with her own wants, not only a parent. The film treats an older woman with a younger man as a happy and valid pairing, and it gives Zara a career win at the end. These identity-driven themes recur from the premise through the ending, but the film presents them as a light romantic lesson rather than a broad activist campaign.
50%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Chris’s fame lets him order Zara around and treat girlfriends as disposable. The film calls this behavior a problem and has him face his habit of using women. The story also rejects the idea that a widowed mother should stop dating or live only for her daughter. These points create a mild critique of male entitlement and old gender rules, but the movie does not attack family, religion, capitalism, or other Western institutions.
30%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is an original story with no established characters, canon, or real historical figures to change.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
One small X account called the dialogue a forced “checklist of random progressive bullshit,” and a reply said a spouse left after about 20 minutes. The accounts had tiny reach, and targeted searches found no large pile-on, review-bomb drive, or boycott. The backlash evidence is fringe and weak.
12%
Creator track record context
Carrie Solomon has no high-confidence record of activist or DEI work. Richard LaGravenese has some human-connection work, including Freedom Writers, but it follows a classical inspirational style. Rich Delia and the listed producers have mainstream commercial records with little public evidence of activist or identity-driven work. The creator context gives only a mild supporting signal.
