Melinda Moore meets Robert in college and falls into a long marriage with him in modern America. She works, pays the bills, and gives up money and comfort while Robert spends years chasing a self-charging battery that he believes will make them rich. Robert cheats on Melinda, but she forgives him and keeps supporting his dream until the pressure breaks the marriage. After their divorce, Robert becomes wealthy with help from Diana, the woman he once cheated with, and Melinda becomes obsessed with what she believes was stolen from her. The film moves from a working home to a courtroom and a luxury cruise, using a loud, dark, and highly dramatic tone.
The film puts a black woman’s anger, sacrifice, and sense of betrayal at the center of the story. Melinda loses her home, money, time, and ability to have children while Robert fails to carry his share of the family burden. The story gives repeated weight to the idea that a man can benefit from a woman’s work and then offer the promised life to someone else. It also shows Melinda’s violence, stalking, and revenge as dangerous choices, so the film does not present her as fully right. The result is a loud relationship thriller about loyalty, money, obsession, and the cost of staying with a bad partner.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Acrimony.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The cast is mainly Black, but the modern setting and black family story do not present the casting as a diversity-first message. No clear identity mismatch appears in the main roles.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The characters talk about marriage, money, betrayal, and anger rather than modern identity, DEI, or activist politics. No speech or recurring line promotes those ideas.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Melinda’s whole story centers on a woman who gives up money, work, time, and her chance to have children while Robert chases his dream. The film repeatedly asks viewers to judge a husband who uses her support and then gives the rewards to another woman. Henson publicly framed the film as pushing back on the “angry black woman” label and on women being dismissed when they speak about unfair treatment. The story also treats Melinda’s violence and obsession as destructive, so the message is mixed rather than a clear activist lesson.
40%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The story shows Robert taking money, labor, and time from Melinda while he avoids normal family duties. Melinda’s sisters warn that one woman should not carry the whole home and marriage alone. The film also shows Melinda’s violent response as dangerous. The criticism stays inside one troubled relationship and does not become a broad attack on men, marriage, religion, or Western institutions.
28%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The movie is an original story with no established characters, source material, or real historical events that it changes.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Public debate centered on whether Melinda or Robert was right and on the film’s treatment of anger and mental illness. No clear anti-woke or anti-DEI complaint about the movie was found, and the separate X pass found none.

Creator track record context
Tyler Perry’s cached creator score is 46/100. His work often centers Black casts and black family stories, and he has made some public statements about race and Democratic politics. The cached producer scores are low, ranging from 8/100 to 33/100. Kim Taylor-Coleman’s cached score is 55/100 because of public support for diverse casting. This gives the film a moderate creator-context signal.
