Tessa Young is a college student who starts a publishing internship after her breakup with Hardin Scott. Hardin is jealous, angry, and hurt by abuse and family trouble from his childhood. Tessa meets Trevor, a calmer coworker, but she still feels pulled toward Hardin. The movie moves through parties, work events, family meetings, sex scenes, and private fights, so its tone is dramatic, steamy, and often messy.
The clearest identity element is a supporting same-sex couple, as Tristan and Steph are shown as girlfriends. The movie also changes Tristan from a straight male character in the novel into a female character with a girlfriend. Tessa's arc includes more sexual freedom, work goals, and a stronger wish to make her own choices. These parts are visible, but the main story stays focused on trust, trauma, jealousy, and a harmful romance rather than politics or a broad social cause.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for After We Collided.
Woke representation / casting
The film shows Tristan and Steph as girlfriends in a visible supporting relationship. The role of Tristan is played by singer Pia Mia as a young woman, while the novel's Tristan was a straight male character. The main couple remains a white straight man and woman, and the larger cast is not sold through diversity-first messaging. The LGBTQ relationship is clear but secondary.

Identity-driven story themes
The film gives Tessa more sexual freedom and lets her push back against shame and control. The film shows Tristan and Steph as a same-sex couple, but their relationship stays in the background. Tessa's work goals and wish to make her own choices add a mild female empowerment angle. The main story still centers on trust, trauma, jealousy, and repeated breakups.
18%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film repeatedly shows Hardin's jealousy, anger, drinking, and control as harmful to Tessa. The film gives these actions a mild toxic masculinity signal because a young woman must deal with a powerful and unstable boyfriend. The story treats Hardin's behavior as personal trauma and romance drama instead of a broad attack on men, family, religion, or other Western institutions.
12%
Woke character or canon changes
The film changes Tristan from a straight male character in the novel into a female character who dates Steph. The change creates a visible LGBTQ couple in the college friend group. Tristan remains a supporting character, so the canon change is clear but does not control the main romance.
