Aftermath follows Eric Daniels, a former Army Ranger who drives his teenage sister Madeleine across Boston’s Tobin Memorial Bridge. A group of armed former military contractors blows up parts of the bridge and takes the drivers hostage. Eric fights to protect Madeleine and the trapped civilians while PTSD brings back memories from Afghanistan. The movie is a violent and tense action thriller with a simple bridge siege setup.
The film’s strongest social message concerns secret military work and the killing of civilians. The hostage takers say the government allowed their unit to use deadly force, then blamed the soldiers when the mission became public. Doc’s testimony and the release of the Shattered Dove files drive the conflict and lead to a hearing about military contractors. The story also follows Eric’s war trauma, his bond with Madeleine, and his choice to protect strangers.
