Alex Truelove is a smart high school senior who serves as class president and wants to have sex with his girlfriend, Claire. He likes Claire and sees her as his closest friend, but he cannot understand why he keeps holding back. At a party, Alex meets Elliot, an openly gay college student, and feels a new kind of attraction. The bright, joking teen comedy follows Alex through parties, school life, awkward sex attempts, hurt feelings, and prom as he tries to understand himself.
The movie makes sexual identity the main subject of Alex’s coming-of-age story. Alex wonders if he is bisexual before he accepts that he is gay, and his fear comes from old bullying as well as pressure to act like a straight, confident boy. The school treats gay, bisexual, and genderqueer identities as visible parts of student life, so the main struggle is Alex’s private fear instead of a fight against school rules. The story also gives Claire a serious emotional role because Alex’s self-discovery hurts the girl who has loved him and been his best friend.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Alex Strangelove.
Woke representation / casting
The central roles are built around visible queer representation, with Alex questioning his sexuality and Elliot as an openly gay love interest. The school group also includes students who present gay, bisexual, and genderqueer identities. The cast’s racial mix fits a modern American high school and does not show a clear race or gender mismatch. The identity focus is strong in the leads, but it mainly serves the movie’s stated coming-out story.
45%
Woke political dialogue
The students repeatedly talk about being gay, bisexual, genderqueer, or straight. Dell complains that people should be only male or female and only gay or straight. Alex also talks through his fear of labels and his need to come out. The dialogue keeps these identity questions close to the main conflict, but it does not become a long political speech.
43%
Identity-driven story themes
Alex’s sexual identity is the movie’s central conflict. The story follows him from pressure to have sex with Claire, through attraction to Elliot, to accepting that he is gay. The film treats coming out and same-sex romance as normal parts of teen life. Alex’s old bullying and fear of macho expectations explain why he hides from the truth. Claire’s pain also shows how his self-discovery changes a close friendship.
88%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film shows Alex feeling pressure from male friends to prove himself through sex. Alex also remembers being bullied with homophobic insults when he was younger. The story treats macho posing and fear of being called gay as harmful. The school is shown as welcoming, so the critique stays on personal behavior and does not attack Christianity, capitalism, or a broad Western institution.
28%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The movie is an original story about Alex Truelove, Claire, and Elliot. It does not adapt established characters or retell real historical events.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
The separate X pass found a few small accounts that linked the movie to Netflix LGBT titles or complained about a plot where the lead ends up gay. Another post called the film weed propaganda because the lead ends up gay. Other posts showed fatigue with coming-out plots rather than a wider political campaign. No large boycott, review-bombing push, or major anti-woke news story was found, so the backlash evidence is fringe.

Creator track record context
Craig Johnson has a recorded creator score of 76/100 and is openly gay with a repeated record of queer stories and representation. Nicholas Weinstock has a recorded score of 45/100 and a stated focus on representation-first projects. Ben Stiller, Jared Ian Goldman, the casting directors, and the script supervisor have lower recorded scores and no matching activist pattern. The title strongly matches Johnson’s record, but the full team is not uniformly identity-focused.
