Henry Pelham is a CIA officer who is sent to find the leak behind a 2012 plane hijacking that killed more than 100 people. His task brings him to Carmel, California, where he has dinner with Celia Harrison, his old partner and former lover. Their talk moves back to their CIA office in Vienna as they remember the day the rescue failed. The movie has a quiet, tense mood and uses flashbacks to turn a love story into a search for a traitor.
The main drama comes from Henry and Celia testing each other while old feelings and old lies come back. Celia is calm and skilled, but the story gives Henry, Celia, and their CIA coworkers all serious doubts and painful choices. The film treats the CIA setting as a place for secrets, mistakes, and hard choices. The plot cares most about personal betrayal, guilt, and whether love can survive the job.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for All the Old Knives.
Woke representation / casting
Thandiwe Newton plays Celia, a skilled CIA officer and one of the two central characters. Laurence Fishburne plays Vick, the chief of the Vienna CIA team. The small CIA team gives two prominent black roles authority in the story. The marketing sells the actors as part of a spy romance, not as a diversity message.
20%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The dialogue focuses on agents, terrorists, the failed rescue, and personal blame. The film does not push a modern party political or activist message.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. The plot centers on a failed rescue, a hidden leak, and betrayal between former lovers. The characters do not carry a recurring identity politics story.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. CIA leaders hide information and arrange deadly consequences, but those actions serve a standard spy betrayal plot. The story does not turn this into a modern activist critique of Western culture or institutions.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film adapts Steinhauer’s own novel. The story does not retell known historical people or alter a legacy franchise character.
0%
