Amulet follows Tomaz, a former soldier who is homeless in London after fleeing a war. A fire destroys his shelter, and a strange nun sends him to repair a rotten house for Magda, a young woman caring for a sick mother. Tomaz grows close to Magda, but the house hides a violent secret and his own past hides a worse one. The film moves between the house, a forest border post, and Tomaz’s memories, using slow dread, body horror, and bloody shocks.
The story gives its strongest weight to feminist revenge and the danger of men who call themselves protectors. Tomaz first looks like a damaged rescuer, but the film reveals that he raped Miriam and wants forgiveness without facing what he did. Magda then becomes the real power in the story, while Tomaz is punished by a female supernatural force and forced into a caretaker role. The film also treats Christian forgiveness and old male power as ideas that can protect guilty men, so gender, patriarchy, and punishment shape the main plot rather than sitting in the background.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Amulet.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The cast uses European actors in roles tied to refugees, war, and a London house. The film does not make the cast itself a diversity statement.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. Most spoken lines deal with Tomaz’s guilt, forgiveness, war, and the house. Tomaz’s repeated claim that he is a good man is a personal moral conflict, not modern identity or activist dialogue.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The story makes male violence against women the main moral test. Tomaz sees himself as a protector, but the film reveals that he raped Miriam and still wants to call himself good. Magda shifts from a woman who needs rescue to the force that controls his punishment. The film turns childbirth, care work, and female anger into horror images. The reversal of gender roles and the revenge message drive the final act.
76%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Amulet treats male protection as dangerous when Tomaz stays after Magda says she does not want him there. It links the attic man’s crimes and Tomaz’s rape of Miriam to male control over women. It presents Christian forgiveness as an idea that can let guilty men avoid real blame. It replaces that idea with an ancient female power that punishes men. This critique of patriarchy and religious ideas shapes the final act.
63%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Amulet is an original story written for this film. It does not change an established character, source text, or real historical figure.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
A small Reddit trailer discussion included a comment asking for a feminism warning and rejecting a political or moral message. That is a limited anti-feminist complaint rather than a broad backlash. The supplied X pass found no anti-woke reaction, and mainstream coverage did not report a serious culture-war dispute.

Creator track record context
Romola Garai has a sustained feminist public record and a cached score of 68/100. Her interviews describe Amulet as a feminist horror story about gender, rape, patriarchy, and revenge. Most listed producers and the casting director have low cached scores and no strong activist record. The title’s creator context therefore comes mainly from Garai.
