Anon is a cold science fiction crime thriller set in a near-future New York where eye implants record everything people see. Police detectives can replay memories, read personal data, and solve almost every crime. Sal Frieland is a tired detective who finds a woman called The Girl, whose life has vanished from the system. He follows her while a hidden killer changes what victims remember and see. The story mixes a police mystery with a warning about a world that trades freedom for safety.
The film briefly shows a lesbian couple who hide their relationship because one woman is the daughter of a Christian-right senator. The scene gives the police a clue about the hacker's clients, but queer identity is not the main subject. The main social message attacks constant government watching, corporate data collection, and the belief that innocent people should have nothing to hide. The Girl presents private life as a right, and the film treats her hacking skills as a way to escape an all-seeing system. The movie does not build its story around race, gender activism, or a diversity campaign.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Anon.
Woke representation / casting
The film briefly shows a lesbian couple among the murder victims. Their identities are visible, but the story does not frame the casting as a diversity message. The main roles are a white male detective and a white female hacker, and the wider cast is not built as a representation-first group.
8%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The characters discuss privacy, data collection, and state power, but the film does not use identity politics or modern activist party language.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The film shows a lesbian couple who keep their relationship hidden because one woman is the daughter of a Christian-right senator. The couple’s secrecy helps the police connect the victims to the hacker’s work. The movie does not make queer rights or identity politics the central conflict.
17%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The police and state require eye implants that record each person’s view and memory. The film repeatedly treats this system as dangerous and presents the hacker’s escape as understandable. The story also warns about ad tracking and data collection by Google-like services. It does not attack Christianity or ordinary family life as its main target.
26%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The movie is an original story by Andrew Niccol. It does not change a known character, canon, or historical event.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Public discussion focused on privacy, surveillance, weak storytelling, and sexual material. No substantial anti-woke or anti-left complaint was found.
0%
Creator track record context
Andrew Niccol’s cached score is 15/100 and reflects socially critical films about surveillance, discrimination, and inequality. Daniel Bekerman’s cached score is 57/100 because of public diversity advocacy, while the other cached producers and casting directors have low scores or no activist record. The title itself follows Niccol’s usual technology warning rather than a clear identity project.
