Captain William Stanaforth travels alone from Earth to Mars on a one-way mission to help start a human colony. He built a machine that turns dirt into drinking water, but a mistake poisons the ship’s supply. Mission control tells him to turn back, while Stanaforth hides the danger and keeps flying forward. The film stays mostly inside his small ship and uses a quiet, serious tone as his body and mind begin to fail.
The film also follows Captain Emily Maddox, a trained black woman astronaut who launches toward Mars soon after him. Her mission adds a second view of the project, but the story stays focused on Stanaforth’s choices. Stanaforth begins as a proud engineer who trusts machines and his own control. The story slowly turns his fight for survival into a lesson about loneliness, death, wonder, and accepting that human beings cannot control everything.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Approaching the Unknown.
Woke representation / casting
The film casts Sanaa Lathan as Captain Emily Maddox, a black woman and fellow astronaut. Maddox has a clear supporting role, leads her own Mars mission, and handles a spacecraft problem. The story does not make her identity a subject, and the white male lead remains the center.
20%
Woke political dialogue
One short interview line says that Earth has problems such as inequality, war, and disasters. The film uses that line to explain why some people want a new start on Mars. The story does not turn the point into a repeated activist debate.
12%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. The plot follows one man’s isolation, survival, pride, and changing view of control. It does not make race, sex, sexuality, or group identity a main story issue.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The film shows Earth as dangerous and flawed, but it does not attack Western institutions, family life, Christianity, or traditional social rules. Mission control acts as a safety check rather than a target of modern activist criticism.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is an original science-fiction story about Captain Stanaforth, not an adaptation of a known character or a real historical event.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No reviewed source reports anti-woke complaints about the film. The separate X pass also found no anti-woke reaction or specific complaints.
0%
Creator track record context
Josh Penn and Matthew Parker have worked on socially focused films about communities facing hardship. Penn also worked on Democratic campaigns. Rosenberg has little public record of activist or identity-politics work, while the other listed crew show little such pattern. This gives mild background context, but the film itself centers on science, isolation, and exploration.
