Clara is a 65-year-old widow and retired music critic who lives in the Aquarius, an old beachside apartment building in Recife, Brazil. She is the last owner who refuses to sell when a property company plans to tear the building down and replace it with a luxury tower. The company uses pressure, loud sex parties, dirty tricks, and hidden termite damage to force her out. Clara fights back with help from her contacts and by uncovering the company’s wrongdoing. The drama is slow, tense, warm, and sometimes funny, with family memories and music shaping the story. The movie gives Clara the power usually given to a younger male hero, and it treats her age, body, and sex life as normal parts of her life. She goes dancing with women friends, faces rejection after a mastectomy, and later chooses a young male escort for pleasure. Clara also stands up to men who use money and authority against her, while her adult son Rodrigo has a male partner named Marcio. The story favors personal freedom, female independence, and resistance to a rich company, but the family conflict and the building’s memories remain just as important as the social message.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Aquarius.
Woke representation / casting
The film puts a 65-year-old woman in nearly every major scene and gives her the role that drives the conflict. The film also gives important space to her daughter, aunt, women friends, and a female lawyer. Clara’s son has a male partner, and her housekeeper is black. The Recife setting makes this cast mix believable, and no diversity-first casting campaign was found.
36%
Woke political dialogue
The film has repeated talk about Recife’s rich and poor sides. Clara calls Diego a rich, well-educated member of the elite whose only character is money. The family also argues about money, inheritance, and the company’s power. The dialogue pushes a clear class and anti-business view, but it contains little direct talk about modern identity politics.
32%
Identity-driven story themes
Clara’s fight for her home is also a fight to keep control of her own life. The movie treats a 65-year-old widow as sexually active and free to choose a young male escort. Clara rejects pressure from developers, her children, and men who expect her to give way. The story presents her gay son and his male partner as a normal family relationship, but that subplot stays small.
58%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The developers use male authority, money, and threats to push a woman out of her home. The film connects their plan to class privilege, city corruption, and the divide between rich and poor. Clara’s family also pressures her while thinking about the money they may inherit. The story treats the wealthy family’s old servant relationship as part of a deeper social order and presents Clara’s open sex life as a challenge to older rules.
49%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is an original story about Clara and the Aquarius building. It does not change an established character or a real historical figure.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
The backlash centered on the cast’s Cannes protest against Dilma Rousseff’s impeachment and on the film’s open support for Brazil’s left. Brazilian right-leaning commentators and social media users called for a boycott, and named news outlets reported the dispute. Reports about the unusual age rating and Oscar omission mostly alleged government retaliation, not new viewer complaints about DEI or identity politics. The supplied X research found no major anti-woke fight about race, gender swaps, or LGBT content.
43%
Creator track record context
Kleber Mendonça Filho has a clear left and anti-right public record, and his work often examines class, neighborhood change, and resistance to power. The film’s title interviews also use feminist language and connect the home invasion to gender and social inequality. Several producers and casting professionals come from Brazilian cinema with queer or social-issue work. Other credited directors have little known activist history, so the wider team gives moderate supporting context.
