Jill Adams is a troubled former soldier who works as a security guard and struggles to care for her two children. A strange event shuts down electronics across the world and leaves almost everyone unable to sleep. As tired people become violent and confused, Jill takes Noah and Matilda on a dangerous trip to a military research site. Matilda can still sleep, so Jill must protect her from frightened crowds and doctors while her own mind begins to fail.
Jill is a woman in the main action role, and the story shows her military training as a major reason the family survives. The film also gives Matilda, a young girl, the key discovery that may save humanity. The mother and daughter are brave and capable, but the story focuses on family, sacrifice, fear, and sleep loss rather than modern identity politics. A few scenes show a church group and military doctors as dangerous, yet the film treats them as threats in the disaster instead of making a wider political argument.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Awake.
Woke representation / casting
The film puts Gina Rodriguez, a Latina actress, in the main action role as Jill, a former soldier who protects the family. The wider cast is mixed, but it does not form a clear one-of-each group or show a story-world mismatch. Rodriguez and the press coverage frame Jill as a female-led hero who moves beyond the mother role and pushes against a gender norm. That gives the casting a mild identity signal, while her skills also have a clear story reason.
22%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The dialogue centers on sleep loss, survival, family, religion, medicine, and military action. It does not deliver modern activist speeches about race, sex, politics, or social systems.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The story repeatedly asks people to look past labels such as addict, prisoner, police officer, and doctor. Jill, Dodge, and the children are judged by their past or their job before their choices change those views. Rodriguez described the film as a chance to question identity and find more empathy and personal freedom. This is a mild theme about how people judge others, not a central race, sex, or queer message.
17%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film shows military doctors studying Matilda and soldiers losing control during the crisis. It also turns Dodge, an escaped prisoner, into a loyal helper instead of a simple villain. Mark Raso said Dodge was meant to touch on unfair prison treatment and that he should not have been in prison. This makes a limited prison-system critique, but it does not attack family life or Christian belief as a whole.
22%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Awake is an original story and does not change an established character, canon, or real historical event.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Audience complaints focus on plot holes, weak logic, pacing, acting, and the ending. No clear anti-woke complaint about DEI, identity politics, or activist messaging appeared in the reviewed reaction.
0%
Creator track record context
The writers and producers have mostly mainstream credits with no clear activist or DEI platform. Joseph Raso has some LGBTQ and gender-role-related work through Seed and Sneakerella. Mark Raso and Gregory Poirier have no clear record of sustained identity-driven activism in the available creator record. The context adds a mild signal, but Awake itself is not built around those subjects.
