Chris is a clumsy guy in Florida who still loves his high school crush Maria. He talks his best friend Bud into a wild road trip to New York so he can tell her how he feels. They steal Bud’s sister Trina’s car, and she breaks out of jail to chase them. The movie mixes a silly buddy story with real hidden-camera pranks on strangers. The tone is gross, loud, and messy, but it often shows regular people trying to help.
The story is mostly about friendship, love, and wild jokes, not about politics. Viewers will see a mostly black main cast and a big White Chicks-style ending where the friends dress as white people at a fancy green fundraiser. Some scenes play with race and class in a light way, like jokes in bars or how people of color help each other during pranks. Press talks and interviews stressed the black and POC cast more than the movie itself lectures about it. A normal viewer mostly notices crude pranks and buddy comedy; race and identity sit in the background, not front and center.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Bad Trip.
Woke representation / casting
Main cast is black leads André, Howery, and Haddish plus Asian-American crush Maria. André sold it as a rare all-POC prank-movie cast. Roles fit modern comedy and their real careers, not race-swaps of known white heroes. Clear identity casting in big roles, but story-world match keeps this moderate, not extreme.
34%
Woke political dialogue
Talk is mostly gross jokes, buddy banter, and panic during pranks. No long activist speeches about DEI, gender, or systemic politics. A few race-tinged one-liners exist, but they play as crude comedy, not lectures.
10%
Identity-driven story themes
Core plot is friendship, a crush, and road-trip chaos. Soft race notes show up: black leads in awkward public spots, a White Chicks-style race drag ending, and critics/creators stressing kindness from working-class people of color. Noticeable as flavor, not the main story engine.
20%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Mild digs at a fancy environmental fundraiser, a “redneck” bar, and cops/jail as chase bits. Not a film built to attack masculinity, church, or “the West.” Reviews note it is gentler than Borat-style takedowns of bigots and power.
5%
Woke character or canon changes
Not present in this title.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
No solid record of right-leaning or anti-woke campaigns calling the movie DEI propaganda or identity politics. Talk stayed on pranks, gross-out humor, and Netflix buzz.
0%
Creator track record context
Lead force André scores 50 with progressive activism and race-focused press for this film. Borel (35) and Gilbert (37) add some progressive context. Most directors and other writers/producers sit near 0–15, so the overall crew pull is moderate, not dominant.
