Badla is a Hindi crime mystery set around Indian characters living in Scotland. Naina Sethi is a successful businesswoman who is found beside the body of her secret lover in a locked hotel room. A famous lawyer meets her in an apartment and asks her to explain the affair, a road death, and the lies that followed. The tense story moves through changing accounts until the truth and the reason for the revenge become clear.
The film puts a woman at the center of a serious crime story and lets Naina control much of the mystery through her planning and lies. Rani, the mother of a dead young man, also becomes an important force in the revenge plot. The film gives both women major choices and treats them as clever and dangerous, while the male lawyer serves as the main questioner and solver. The story uses female power and agency as visible character traits, but its main ideas remain cheating, guilt, truth, punishment, and revenge.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Badla.
Woke representation / casting
Badla places a successful Indian woman at the center and gives Rani, another woman, a major role in the revenge plot. The main cast fits the film's Indian setting in Scotland, and it does not create a forced mix of unrelated identities. The production deliberately changes the original male accused into a woman and the original female lawyer into a man. The Women’s Day release and equal-screen-space framing make gender representation a visible part of the casting choice.
37%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The dialogue focuses on evidence, truth, lies, guilt, revenge, and punishment. The film does not push modern identity, DEI, or activist ideas through its spoken lines.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Naina is a powerful businesswoman who drives the mystery, hides key facts, and tries to control the story. Rani becomes an active planner in the revenge plot instead of a silent grieving parent. The film therefore gives women strong agency in two important roles. The main message remains about cheating, guilt, truth, and revenge, not a current campaign about gender or identity.
34%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The police, court, and lawyer are used as parts of the murder puzzle. The film does not attack Western culture, family life, capitalism, religion, or traditional gender roles through modern activist ideas.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Badla is an official remake of the Spanish thriller The Invisible Guest. The original has a male accused and a female lawyer, while Badla makes Naina the accused and Badal the male lawyer. The remake also changes the grieving family around the dead boy and makes Rani, the mother, a prominent revenge figure. These gender changes shape the main conflict from beginning to end.
45%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The separate X research found no anti-woke complaints about the film. News and audience posts mostly praised the suspense or criticized the remake, the ending, and legal logic, with no sustained DEI, identity-politics, or activist backlash.

Creator track record context
Cached context rates Sujoy Ghosh at 48 and Shah Rukh Khan at 53 because of female-focused work and support for women's equality. Cached context rates Oriol Paulo at 19 for statements about gender equality and strong female leads. Gauri Khan is 21, while the other listed producers and script supervisor are 0 to 3 and have no clear activist profile. This gives Badla a mild creator track record signal, not a dominant one.
