Roy Freeman is a retired homicide detective who is losing his memory after Alzheimer’s disease and an experimental treatment. When Isaac Samuel faces execution for a professor’s murder, Roy reopens the case because he cannot trust what he remembers from the original investigation. The story moves through Roy’s home, a prison, bars, and flashbacks to the old murder. The film has a dark crime story tone built around false memories, sex, violence, guilt, and a final truth about Roy’s own past.
The clearest identity-related material comes through Laura Baines, a psychology student who says Professor Joseph Wieder used her research and denied her credit. The film also shows Wieder using his work on trauma to exploit women, while Roy and his partner help hide the truth and leave a black prisoner in jail for a crime he did not commit. These events may look like a mild message about women’s power and abuse by institutions, but the film treats them as parts of a murder puzzle rather than a wider activist message. Its main themes are memory, betrayal, personal guilt, damaged people, and the cost of covering up a crime.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Sleeping Dogs.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The main cast is mostly white, with a black prisoner and a few supporting characters from other backgrounds. The film does not frame the casting as a diversity goal or build a repeated representation pattern.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The dialogue deals with the murder, memory treatment, trauma, sex, police work, and guilt. No character delivers a recurring activist, DEI, or left-wing political message.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Laura Baines says Professor Joseph Wieder used her research and denied her credit. The film also shows Wieder exploiting women through his trauma work, and these wrongs help drive the mystery. The story does not turn them into a broad message about women or identity, so the element stays mild.
12%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Dr. Wieder is shown using his work to exploit women and taking credit for Laura’s research. Roy and Jimmy also help keep an innocent black prisoner in jail through a failed police investigation and a cover-up. The film treats these as crimes by flawed people rather than a current activist attack on men, police, or Western culture.
14%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film changes parts of the novel for its single mystery, including the timeline and who the killer is. No woke or identity-driven change to a known character, canon, or real historical event is confirmed.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The separate X pass found no anti-woke reaction or specific complaint about this film. Other online discussion focused on review quality or confusion with the unrelated video-game project.
