Manhattan Night follows Porter Wren, a New York crime writer who makes money from stories about murder and tragedy. He is also a husband and father who wants to protect his family. After a widow asks him to investigate her filmmaker husband's strange death, Porter begins an affair and walks into blackmail, threats, and violence. The film uses dark streets, old video recordings, and a slow crime story to create a grim and uneasy mood.
The movie has little audience-visible woke content. Jennifer Beals plays Lisa Wren, a black surgeon married to Porter, a white reporter, but the film treats their family as a normal part of modern New York and does not make race a subject. The story does not use activist speeches, identity politics, queer themes, or a diversity message. Its main ideas are lust, guilt, abuse, media power, family damage, and the moral cost of chasing a story.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Manhattan Night.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The main cast includes Jennifer Beals as a black surgeon and wife to Adrien Brody's white reporter. The film presents their marriage and her job as ordinary parts of a modern New York family. It does not use the pairing as an identity statement or repeat a diversity-first pattern in the leading roles.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The dialogue stays on murder, sex, blackmail, work, marriage, and guilt. No character gives an activist speech or argues about race, gender, sexuality, or DEI.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. The story centers on adultery, murder, blackmail, guilt, and moral failure. Caroline's abuse and Porter's cheating are personal plot points, not a message about an identity group or a current activist issue.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The film shows a newspaper bought by a rich, predatory owner and a dying print job. It treats those problems as part of a crime plot, not as a modern activist attack on capitalism, family life, or Western culture.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is based on Colin Harrison's 1996 novel and does not change a known character, canon, or historical figure for an identity message. Its shorter title and screenplay changes are ordinary adaptation choices.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The supplied X research found no anti-woke reaction, defense, campaign, or review-bombing. Web reviews and audience pages discuss pacing, plot logic, sex, and acting, not DEI or identity politics. No reported complaint says that the film pushes left-wing messaging.
0%
Creator track record context
The writer and listed directors have no known activist pattern in the supplied creator record. Adrien Brody has occasional liberal leanings but no strong identity-politics pattern. Producer and actor Jennifer Beals has a stronger record of LGBTQ+ rights and inclusion advocacy outside this film. The movie does not carry those causes into its story or marketing.
