Deep Water follows Vic Van Allen, a rich man who lives with his wife Melinda and their young daughter in a quiet New Orleans suburb. Vic lets Melinda see other men because he wants to keep their marriage together, but he grows jealous when her lovers start to disappear. Melinda treats the affairs as a game, while Vic hides his anger behind a calm face, his snail collection, and long bike rides. When a local writer named Don starts asking questions, the couple's private game turns into a murder mystery.
The film's main subject is a broken marriage built on jealousy, sex, control, and fear. Melinda uses her affairs to upset and test Vic, while Vic uses threats and murder to keep power over the marriage. Their young daughter sees the tension, but the adults keep pulling her into their troubled home life. The story shows both people as selfish and dangerous, so their twisted bond matters more than any wider social or political issue.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Deep Water.
Woke representation / casting
Not present in this title.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. All dialogue centers on personal relationships, jealousy, affairs, and suspicion with no political, activist, or identity content.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. The narrative examines individual marital dysfunction and moral ambiguity without race, gender ideology, queer elements, or social identity plotlines.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. Personal conflicts stay psychological and character-focused; they are not reframed as activist critiques of patriarchy, capitalism, or Western norms.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The adaptation updates the 1957 novel’s setting and adds erotic intensity for modern audiences but makes no identity-driven or DEI reinterpretations of characters or source material.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No anti-woke or right-leaning complaints frame the film as advancing woke or identity politics messaging; criticism targets only its thriller execution.

Creator track record context
Sam Levinson's work on Euphoria adds a small context signal because that show gives strong attention to sex, youth, and social problems. Adrian Lyne's work centers on sexual thrillers, not political or identity activism. Patricia Highsmith, Zach Helm, the producers, and Ellen Chenoweth also have no strong cached identity-focused record. This background is mild and does not drive Deep Water's story.
