Baker Dill is a troubled fishing boat captain on the warm, isolated Plymouth Island. He drinks too much, sleeps with customers, and spends his days chasing a giant tuna called Justice. His quiet routine breaks when his former wife, Karen, asks him to kill her violent new husband, Frank. The tense mystery then shifts into a strange story about grief, a boy, and a computer game.
Karen's abuse and her wish to protect her son drive the murder plan, while Baker's war trauma and love for his child shape his choices. The film treats Frank's control and violence as the main evil, but it also treats revenge as a possible answer. Baker learns that his island life is part of a game made by Patrick, his son, to face the family crisis. The movie focuses on abuse, family pain, guilt, and the line between real life and a created world.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Serenity.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The film uses a mostly white lead group and one black supporting role without a diversity-first casting message. The story does not present the cast as an identity statement.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. Characters talk about murder, war, abuse, right and wrong, and a computer game. The movie does not use current political slogans or identity-based political arguments.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The story makes an abused woman’s rage and wish to protect her child central to the murder plan. The film treats Karen as a person trapped by abuse rather than only as a dangerous woman from an old crime film. Anne Hathaway described the role as a way to show the pain behind that character type. The movie does not turn this into a wider argument about patriarchy or identity politics.
24%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The movie presents a wealthy husband who uses male power and control to trap his wife. Karen and Patrick have no clear safe legal way out of the abuse. This creates a limited critique of male violence and social failure, but the film does not attack Western institutions, religion, or family life as a whole.
15%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Serenity is an original story about a fisherman, his family, and a computer game. It does not change an established character, canon, or historical event.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Available news and audience discussion focus on the twist, poor reviews, adult content, and failed marketing. No meaningful anti-woke backlash says the film pushes DEI, identity politics, or left-wing messaging.
0%
Creator track record context
Steven Knight has a low stored score and is mainly linked to crime, class, and power stories. The stored scores for the casting and producing team are mostly low to moderate, with some inclusion or LGBTQ-related credits. The film interviews found no activist or diversity-first statement about Serenity. This background gives the film only a mild creator-context signal.
