Emma Corrigan is a young marketing worker in New York who feels stuck in a dull job and a weak relationship. During a rough flight, she thinks the plane will crash and tells a handsome stranger every secret she has. She soon learns that the stranger is Jack Harper, the new chief of her company, so her private thoughts follow her into the office. The film uses awkward jokes, sexual talk, and a light romantic tone as Emma tries to decide whether she can trust Jack and herself.
The movie has a visibly mixed supporting cast, including Cybill, a black transgender woman who supervises Emma, and two women friends from different ethnic backgrounds. Cybill's identity is part of the film's world, but it is not the main problem or a major plot line. Emma's main story stresses self-acceptance, honest feelings, and the choice to leave a relationship that does not make her happy. The film has no political debate or modern activist campaign, so its woke elements stay mild beside the romance and comedy.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Can You Keep a Secret?.
Woke representation / casting
The movie places a black transgender woman, Cybill, in a visible office supervisor role. Emma’s two main roommates are played by Sunita Mani and Kimiko Glenn. The cast includes several women in important office and friend roles. These choices fit a modern New York workplace, but the filmmakers clearly framed the casting as a diversity choice.
42%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The characters do not discuss parties, elections, activist campaigns, or current political causes. The dialogue stays on work, sex, secrets, dating, and personal honesty.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Cybill is a transgender woman who works as Emma’s supervisor. The film treats her as a normal part of the office, and her identity does not drive the plot. Emma learns to accept her flaws and speak honestly about love. That gives the film a mild self-acceptance and identity message, but the romance and comedy remain central.
24%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The movie shows workplace and dating problems, but it does not attack traditional family, Christianity, capitalism, or Western institutions.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The movie changes London to New York and updates the workplace and side characters. No change is presented as a race, gender, or identity message.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The supplied X research found no anti-woke reaction or named complaints. Wider reviews and audience posts focus on weak jokes, plot logic, sexual content, and book-to-film changes.
0%
Creator track record context
Elise Duran has a moderate representation-focused record through work about transgender and gay people. Alexandra Daddario has supported a later film about a nonbinary teen. Sophie Kinsella often centers women who push against social expectations, but her work is mainly commercial comedy. This context is noticeable, while the movie itself remains a light romance.
