Gordon Kinski is a kind English teacher from Brooklyn. He travels to Quebec City with his French Canadian girlfriend, Sophie, after she gets a chance to become a head chef. Gordon feels out of place with her family and worries about her former girlfriend, Ruby, who now runs the restaurant. The movie is a light romance with family jokes, food, jealousy, and embarrassing mistakes. Sophie’s past relationship with Ruby makes bisexuality a clear part of the story. The movie also gives Sophie and Ruby strong careers while Gordon is the less confident partner. A few jokes about Sophie changing teams and dating women may feel dated or awkward. These ideas matter to the romance, but the movie stays focused on Gordon’s jealousy and his effort to win Sophie back.
