Cellar Door follows Sera Winter, a math professor, and her husband, John, as they search for a new home in the Portland suburbs after losing a baby. A wealthy man gives them a grand house for free, but they must never open its cellar door. John becomes worried about the house and about the secrets in his marriage, while Sera clings to the fresh start she thinks the home can provide. The film is a slow, tense domestic thriller that turns a simple house rule into a test of trust, greed, and fear.
The film's strongest themes are grief, marriage, infidelity, and the need to protect a perfect-looking life. John is a selfish husband who hides an affair and faces a sexual harassment claim that is later tied to that affair. Sera responds to the pressure with control, lies, and violence, so the story presents her power as frightening rather than as a political message. The movie uses the locked door as a symbol for secrets, and its ending leaves the couple trapped inside the life they wanted.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Cellar Door.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The lead couple and main supporting roles are presented as ordinary people in a modern Portland setting. The film does not frame any casting choice as a diversity or identity statement. Race, ethnicity, and gender do not drive the story.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The film includes a sexual harassment claim at John's workplace, but the claim sets up his affair and the later murder case. The characters do not use the issue to argue for DEI, identity politics, or activist ideas.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. The story centers on miscarriage grief, marriage, adultery, greed, and hidden guilt. Sera's control and violence are shown as part of a horror twist, not as a call for female empowerment or identity politics. The film does not build its conflict around race, gender, sexuality, or group rights.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The story criticizes lying, cheating, greed, and the wish to look perfect. Its police and workplace scenes move the murder plot forward, but they do not attack Western institutions or traditional family life. The film ends with the couple trying to keep a home and family, not with a modern activist lesson.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is an original contemporary thriller with no established characters, source canon, or real historical figures.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The supplied X pass found no anti-woke reaction. Web and Reddit discussion centered on the weak plot, the meaning of the cellar, and the twist. One broad “Hollywood agenda” complaint did not identify woke, DEI, identity, or left-wing content.

Creator track record context
The cached record gives Vaughn Stein a 14, Lori Evans Taylor a 6, and Sam Scott a 0, which shows little creator track record context for woke themes. Most producers also have low cached scores. Christopher Tricarico has a higher cached score because he produced the queer-focused drama Uncle Frank, and Sheila Hanahan has supported workshops for women in film, but neither link is tied to this movie's story or marketing.
