Howard Inlet is a New York advertising executive who withdraws from life after his young daughter dies. He writes angry letters to Love, Time, and Death because he cannot make sense of his loss. His partners hire three actors to play those ideas and film his replies so they can remove his control over a company sale. The movie mixes a sad family story with strange meetings, warm holiday scenes, and late surprises. Claire has a small supporting role as a woman helping lead the agency while Howard cannot work. Her story also follows her wish to become a mother after spending years focused on the company. Whit tries to repair his bond with his daughter, while Simon hides his cancer and worries about providing for his family. Howard's meetings with Madeleine at a grief group help him face his daughter's death and rebuild a close bond.
