Dating Amber follows Eddie and Amber, two teenagers in rural County Kildare in 1995. Eddie wants to join the Irish Army like his father, while Amber plans to leave for London after school. Both teens are hiding that they are gay or lesbian, so they pretend to date and use the fake romance to quiet school gossip and bullying. Their plan brings them close, but Eddie sinks deeper into fear while Amber starts to build a life outside the town. The film mixes sharp jokes, awkward teen sex talk, family pain, and sad moments with a warm story about friendship.
Queer identity is not a side detail because Eddie’s fear and Amber’s growing honesty drive the main plot. The film takes the pair into a gay bar, where Eddie meets a drag performer and Amber meets Sarah. Homophobic insults and pressure to look straight shape the choices that both teens make. Amber questions the town’s rules about women and sex, while Eddie’s Army goal is tied to a narrow idea of manhood. The story ends by praising self-acceptance and a more honest life, even though the characters still face family and social costs.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Dating Amber.
Woke representation / casting
The two central roles are built around queer identity, with Eddie as a gay boy and Amber as a lesbian girl. The film also gives clear screen time to Sarah, a same-sex relationship, a gay bar, and a drag performer. The Irish leads fit the 1995 rural setting, so the score does not come from an ethnic mismatch. The queer identity focus is still a major part of what viewers see.
84%
Woke political dialogue
Amber jokes that calling a girl a slut is a patriarchal idea. She mocks the demand that she walk more feminine while Eddie performs straight masculinity. The teens repeatedly talk about being gay, being normal, coming out, and the pressure to act straight. These ideas appear in jokes and tense talks, but the film does not stop for long political speeches.
46%
Identity-driven story themes
The movie’s main conflict is whether Eddie and Amber will stop hiding that Eddie is gay and Amber is lesbian. The fake relationship protects them from homophobic bullying and from a small town that expects them to act straight. Amber moves toward coming out and a girlfriend, while Eddie fights shame and pressure to join the Army. The ending supports accepting queer identity and choosing a life that fits the person.
96%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The school and town treat straight dating as the safe normal choice. Eddie’s father and army training tie manhood to toughness, obedience, and military service. The film makes a Catholic sex lesson and a priest who exposes Amber look foolish and harmful. The story also shows how family pressure and male shame damage people, although the criticism stays tied to 1995 rural Ireland.
52%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is an original story about fictional teenagers. It does not change established characters, canon, or real historical figures.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The separate X pass reports no anti-woke reaction. Web and audience searches found praise or neutral discussion, not a reliable boycott, review-bombing campaign, or complaint that the film pushes DEI or identity politics.
