Death to 2021 is a one-hour comedy special set in the news-filled world of 2021. It mixes real news clips with fake interviews from people who claim to be experts, reporters, workers, or ordinary citizens. Hugh Grant plays Tennyson Foss, a proud historian who tries to explain the year while other voices offer stranger views. The special moves through the Capitol riot, the pandemic, vaccines, online life, politics, celebrity news, and everyday fear in a dark and sarcastic tone.
The special gives repeated space to jokes about Trump supporters, election claims, anti-vaccine ideas, and conspiracy news. It also makes preferred pronouns, gender politics, and the idea of being “woke” part of its comedy, mainly through Tennyson’s complaints. Several sketches treat modern politics and media as a fight between facts and foolish claims, with conservative characters often serving as the main targets. The special also puts women and minority actors in prominent reporter, science, business, and public roles, but it does not make their identities the main story.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Death to 2021.
Woke representation / casting
The special gives several prominent roles to minority actors, including Lucy Liu as a Washington journalist, William Jackson Harper as a social-media CEO, and Samson Kayo as a scientist. Women also play a journalist, a news anchor, and a public commentator. The modern news setting makes these choices believable, and the film does not present them as a diversity campaign.
20%
Woke political dialogue
The special repeatedly talks about the Capitol riot, Trump supporters, election claims, anti-vaccine beliefs, and conspiracy news. Tennyson Foss opens with a joke about preferred pronouns and says he does not do the “wokey-kokey.” Other jokes target gender politics and the idea that James Bond must become politically correct. The repeated targets make a left-leaning political view easy to notice across the hour.
52%
Identity-driven story themes
The special uses the culture war around 2021 as a running theme. The story treats pronoun debates, gender politics, and the idea of being “woke” as part of a wider fight over modern public life. Conservative and anti-woke characters often look foolish or extreme, while factual voices get the stronger position. The theme recurs, but the special remains a fast news recap instead of an identity-centered character story.
40%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The special repeatedly treats Trump supporters, anti-vaxxers, election conspiracy hosts, and January 6 rioters as foolish or dangerous. The jokes also question the power of social-media companies and the way news outlets shape public fear. The film mocks arguments about gender and political correctness through Tennyson Foss and its James Bond jokes. This is a recurring anti-conservative and media critique, but it is not a deep attack on one Western institution.
44%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The special uses fictional talking-head characters and real news footage. It does not change an established character, canon, or historical figure into a different identity.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Some IMDb users called the special “leftist propaganda” and said it pushed one side of the political story. Small Reddit comments made the same complaint and described it as jokes about Trump supporters and anti-vaxxers without equal attacks on the other side. The supplied X search found three small accounts calling it woke nonsense, left-leaning satire, or a poor attack on woke culture. No boycott, review-bombing campaign, or major right-leaning outlet reaction was found, so the backlash remains fringe.

Creator track record context
The writing team includes Kemah Bob, Akemnji Ndifornyen, Kae Kurd, Charlie George, and Tim Renkow, whose cached profiles show repeated work about race, representation, disability, or LGBTQ+ themes. Producers Daniel Powell and Alex Bach also have records of supporting progressive stories and underrepresented voices. Josh Ruben has a smaller pattern tied to sexism and male privilege, while Jack Clough and several writers have little public political record. The combined context is mixed but clearly supports the special’s left-leaning social satire.
