Detainment is a short true-crime drama set in Merseyside, England, in 1993. Jon Venables and Robert Thompson are ten-year-old boys who are taken to separate police rooms after two-year-old James Bulger disappears. The boys give different stories while officers try to learn what happened during their walk with James. The film uses quiet scenes, close questioning, and dark flashbacks to create a tense and painful mood.
The story keeps returning to the boys’ age and their confused, changing answers. It shows them with their parents and presents them as children who have done a terrible thing, rather than as simple monsters. The film asks how people should judge children who commit a serious crime and whether their age changes how society should respond. Its main themes are guilt, blame, childhood, punishment, and the lasting pain of the victim’s family.
