Maternal Instinct follows Taylor Parker, a woman who builds a false life around money, love, and a pregnancy that never happened. The story begins in rural East Texas and follows the lies that led to the 2020 killing of Reagan Simmons-Hancock, a pregnant friend. Parker kills Reagan, removes her unborn baby, and tries to pass it off as her own when police stop her on the road. The tone is dark, tense, and deeply disturbing.
The film explores deception, obsession, trust, and the damage caused by one person’s need to keep a false story alive. It shows family members and friends trying to check Parker’s claims while medical privacy rules slow them down. The story also asks how a woman who already had children could pretend to be pregnant and harm another mother for a baby. The film leaves viewers with a warning about false trust, hidden lies, and the lasting pain left for the surviving family.

0%

Identity-driven story themes
Not present. The film centers on a fake pregnancy, murder, and family grief. It does not build the story around current identity politics or a group identity.

Western institutional / cultural critique
Medical privacy rules block Parker’s family and friends from checking her pregnancy claims. The film presents that barrier as a failure that left Reagan vulnerable. This point is brief and tied to the case, rather than a broad attack on Western institutions.

Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is a documentary about a real criminal case. It does not alter a known character or retell a past event through an identity-based rewrite.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No anti-woke complaints, boycotts, or mass low ratings were found on X. Web discussion focused on shock, the victims, missing case details, and the treatment of dogs.

Creator track record context
Jessica Dimmock has directed a documentary centered on transgender women. Liz Garbus and Dan Cogan have backed social-issue films and women-led projects. Other cached producer records include work about queer victims, Indigenous women, and black women’s reports of sexual assault, while several producers have little activist record. This is a mixed but noticeable creator track record, while this film stays focused on a crime case.
